Wrangler started slipping on the way to Fossil Rock and I'm trying to figure out if I need a new box or just a proper service
Had a bit of a nightmare yesterday afternoon trying to head out towards Fossil Rock with a couple of mates in my 2016 Wrangler Unlimited and about halfway there the transmission just started slipping like crazy whenever I tried to give it some gas to get up a slight incline, revs would shoot up and the Jeep would barely move and there was this burnt smell coming through the vents that made us all look at each other like we knew this was going to be an expensive phone call to the recovery truck. I managed to limp it back to Sharjah at about sixty kilometers an hour with the hazards on and my ego completely shattered, and now it's sitting outside my building in Al Taawun looking sad and I'm trying to figure out if this is just a fluid issue because I'll be honest I don't think the gearbox oil has ever been changed in the time I've owned it and I've put about forty thousand hard kilometers on it myself including plenty of desert bashing. My usual garage guy near Rolla said he can do a fluid flush but he doesn't have the proper Mopar ATF+4 stuff and he said if it's already slipping that badly then a flush might just finish it off and I should find someone who actually knows these Chrysler boxes inside out. I was poking around on some Jeep forums last night and a few guys mentioned there are proper Jeep Transmission Specialists Sharjah over in Industrial Area that rebuild the valve bodies and replace the clutch packs on these W5A580 units without trying to upsell you a whole new gearbox from the dealer for the price of a used hatchback, and I'm really hoping that's true because I love this Wrangler and I don't want to give up on it just because I neglected the transmission fluid like an idiot for too long. Anyone on here actually had their JK gearbox rebuilt locally and can tell me if it's worth the investment or if I should just cut my losses and start looking at used transmissions from Al Sajaa?
