The three heads elephant is a symbol of 3 kingdoms of Lane Xang: Luang-Prabang, Vientiane and Champsack and was created to be Royal of Laos National flag in Early 1890's.
Lao Historian didn't tell specific of Lane Xang flag since King Fangum to King Sackkarinh. There was only King Souryavongsa's era had a flag that was the same Laos PDR flag right now but, didn't have a round white moon in the middle of it. ( I saw this flag in Lane Xang history book in Chiangmai Thailand library in 1970 ). Non of Laos historian told about this flag during King Souryavongsa era.

My grand pa toll me the ancient Laotian the one who has the tattoo around their legs those people were ancient warriors call Thoung dam (black flag) there are some left untill now most of them living in the country side!
