Aircraft parts factory takes shape in Savannakhet

A factory that will produce spare parts for Boeing aircraft is now about 40 percent complete after construction began over three months ago in the Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone in Savannakhet province.

The factory will be finished in August, Savannakhet provincial Investment Promotion and Legal Division Head Mr Phanomkone Daralatsamy told Vientiane Times yesterday. The project is an investment by a private company group (Aero Works in Asia) from Holland and involves a one hectare land concession, registered capital of about US$500,000 and a 30 year concession period, he said. The factory will produce small aircraft parts which will then be further developed at another location.

Most of the raw materials to be used will be imported from Holland, for which the Lao government will facilitate import procedures.

The project will help to develop Lao labour skills in the field of aircraft parts manufacturing.

It will also provide employment opportunities for local people and contribute to socio-economic development, Mr Phanomkone said. The factory is expected to increase production capacity for the purpose of industrialisation and progressive modernisation in Laos, as well as help to gradually improve Lao people’s living conditions and boost economic development.

The government is encouraging foreign investment in Laos, aiming to enhance bilateral relations and economic cooperation with other nations. The Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone has two separate sites, both lo cated in Savannakhet province.

Mr Phanomkone said several domestic and international companies are running businesses in the zone, including a Toyota car assembly plant and factory to produce mining equipment for export to Australia.

“We recently agreed to grant approval to a Malaysian company to establish a motorbike assembly plant in the zone. The company is now conducting a market survey,” he said.

Some Chinese companies have expressed interest in setting up rice mills to process goods for export to China but provincial authorities have not yet approved the project as they are unsure that Lao farmers can supply adequate quantities of rice, he added.

Several other companies from Asian countries are interested in investing in the zone but will conduct feasibility studies first.

That is good news for laos, Aircraft jobs is going to laos to benefits the country. I hope Boeing knows whats its doing, since they Fail in USA and sold part of its company now known as Spirit. Also Cessna (another giant Aircraft company) Fail in outsourcing in Mexico for cheap labor.

Just hope Boeing gets smart and send their lao workers for international work and train the rice farmers. Its good news but, bringing bad parts back to the USA asking for a lawsuit/loss money for importing bad parts.

Ah hey taxi was there any jobs in Vientiane anyways? Most trys to go over the boarder to Thai, that why they change the boarder gate for every 14dyays and no more 2 months.

If the work is True within the years, maybe I should get my cati programming license. So one day I can setup a machine shop and teach them how to run the Cnc machines.

I love news like this one. I hope it will usher in more employment opportunities for people, and that the pay will actually be substantial.

Do u know Boeing? Its one of the major aircraft company and still is on government contract. All company in the USA goes international for cheap labor, Whatever you guys live off on its what they want to pay you. General labor for BOEing is $14-18mininum an HOUR to start. What do u think they will pay the Laos people.....$2-5 BUCKS A DAY?

Example: Nike AIR shoes made in China by people for $1 a day and export back to USA for $70-150 bucks a shoe. I think we crack down that, since they haven't been any news about it since.

Well, 2 to 5 bucks a day is better to the people who would otherwise be making one dollar a day and gives the government tax revenue which they can hopefully use properly.

If this company is sucessful, other companies will come to Laos for cheap labor. The more companies that exist, the more competitave the pay will be to keep the employees they have from leaving to a better paying position elsewhere. When enough of this happens, and wages increase, we will see a rise in middle class.

Its all relative, in the USA household exspense is around $4000-$6000ish and in Lao maybe taking only around $400 to $500 with the same life style.

No, you can't have more than one wife in Laos but in the US you can.  Just ask the mormons.
