Oudomxay province is to have its first shopping mall, with construction by a Chinese investor currently underway in the provincial capital and a new hotel also in the pipeline.
Workers begin construction on the new shopping complex.
The projects are expected to be completed in the next two years.
Head of the Foreign and Domestic Investment Division of Oudomxay Planning and Investment Department, Mr Ouphone Mingbouppha, said yesterday the Chinese investor received a 30-40 year concession from the province for an area of 8,000 square metres to build the mall and three star hotel.
“Our province currently has Luexay market which is the biggest one in the provincial capital, but we will have our first mall in the next two years after the investor started construction earlier this year,” he said.
He said the site would include a four-storey hotel, a single-storey mall and a two-storey market building. It will cost over 25 billion kip (US$3 million).
The hotel will help the province accommodate tourists, while the mall will sell a wide variety of products and industrial goods from China and Laos to impress and meet the needs of shoppers.
“The mall will be similar to the Lotus and Big C malls,” he said.

Only $3 million to build a four-storey hotel, a single-storey mall and a two-storey market building? Let's pray that we won't have an earthquake in Laos.
