Local people in Xiengkouang province built many of these buddha statues to protect forests in their community. What's a bright idea

Wow looks nice too. But why are the tree trunks look thin, are those secondary growth. I see balding forest in Luangnamtha just before coming to the forest reserve area. I hope they will re-plant trees in those areas as well. By doing this both forest and people are protected.

I'm a bit skeptical about this. You see, not all people believe in Buddhism. Many believe in Christianity or animism. Nonetheless, it's a good initiative.

If you are in Xiengkhouang, you will see everyday there are many trucks that carry big logs leaving the province. How can you convince local people not to cut down the trees when 'outsiders' are allowed to cut them?

Laos is losing it's forests at an increasing rate. That means more is lost every year. Until they get a handle on corruption, officials in the Lao govt will continue to sell the forests of Laos.

if those Buddha are valuable , i think the bad people will steal them and cutting the tree around as well. it doesn't work to build buddha to protect the forest.

They make the Law, and they themself cut it down and sent it out of the Country. some of these official even have their own little sawmill for finish good. Now let' me ask all of you here, Do you think a regular folks like you and me would dare go into reserve land or forest and cut down the big tree. Think agian, and think hard. and of course some of the poor man or farmers might have cut a small tree just for his own use, like build a small hut for his own family you know. but they weren't the one that destroy the forest, the one who did... ya'll know who..
