From my observation, traditional Lao sinh is sewn on both sides and often has a design at the lower part either sewn or intricately woven. IT is worn like a wrap around but no extra long cloth to tie into a ribbon.

Thais uses a cloth either whole or sewn on one side only and worn as wrap around the waist but with this extended cloth to use to tie into the ribbon. it doesnt have the distinct design on the lower part like the one you often found in Lao sinh.

Cambodian sinh also dont have the distinct design at the lower part but the cloth is sewn on both sides similar to Lao. But the way they wear it is that creases or folds form in front of the belly, which you dont observe from both Thai and Lao. Im not familiar about Burmese sinh, though.

I remember seeing Thai wearing Lao sinh on Thai Tv that looks exactly like the one u would see Sao Lao wearing it in there daily life in Laos.  This sinh looks like for wearing in a daily term tho.  But still I can't tell there is so many design they all look the same, well the Lao and thai ones does which gets alot of foreigner confused between the differance.

I think still foreigner wouldn't know the differance because nowadays they are all the same look espicially the Lao and Thai sinh. Alot of people asked me whats the differance between Thai and Lao sinh because they loook the same. LOL!! I notice there is many sinh comming in all sort of design, But if u look at from the big picture they all resemble the same look and it doesn't matter if its fold in different ways its still fold the same ways as everyone else. LOL!! I been looking into other sinh from our neighbors those commoners sinh look all the same. And no I am not talking about the wedding dress just those other one that would be worn on commoners in all country.

I bought both thai and lao sinh. When I wear the thai sinh and you raise the flap in front you will see one of my legs.

Think you have bought those kinda Thai sinh made for sale to foreign tourists (mostly Westerners) - it's like one piece of rectangular cloth to be worn by wrapping it around you, one size fits all. Thai people themselves will sew their own sinh cloth such that the cloth becomes a 'tube', it's the same way as Lao people - to wear it you have to 'step into the middle'.

Just in Laos alone, there are different types of sinh.

Most common is the kind that is used for school uniform & uniforms for women soldiers, Lao Airlines staff, bank staff, etc. It's made from 2 pieces of cloth - one big piece that's the 'dtua sinh' ('body of the skirt') + one narrow piece that's called the 'dtin'. The 'dtin' is sewn on at the bottom of the 'dtua sinh', & usually has a more complicated weaving pattern & more colours (especially gold or silver). Because the 'dtin' & the 'dtua sinh' are separate pieces of cloth, you can mix & match when buying it.

Another kind is the type made by Tai Lue, Tai Daeng & some other ethnic groups. It's made from one long piece of cloth that is cut into 2 halves. The 2 halves are then sewn together such that one half becomes the front & the other half becomes the back (the cutting line becomes the waist part of the sinh).

The first type, I've seen only in Laos so far...I think. In Thailand there are some that look similar but the 'dtin' was not a separate piece...but maybe cos I was looking at machine-made sinh, not hand woven? & maybe I haven't travelled widely enough in Thailand.

The second type, you can find it in Laos, Thailand, Burma & Yunnan - anywhere where you can find Tai Lue, Tai Daeng, Tai Yai, Tai Dam, etc people.

I think there are even more types in Laos.

The pattern of weaving for the 'dtua sinh' depends on ethnic group. So you'll find the same ikat/mutmee-style pattern in Laos & Isaan. In different regions of Thailand you'll also find different patterns - e.g. central Thailand different from south Thailand. Also, there are different patterns for royal court & commoners. In Luang Prabang there's a certain pattern that is used for Nang Sangkan's sinh during Pi Mai Lao celebrations, you won't see most people wearing that pattern on the streets.

Why is it, when we talk about anything w/ cultures and history it's gotta be a Thai Lao thing. Someone just gotta fu*king bring up stupid, ignorant ranting. Get over it mr/ms, it's 2009, move on... Though we two countries have our diff, but we share a huge history and deep culture.

*singh* anyway I like the Laotian dresses, but some time it's over done. Especially the hair, I have sisters and when I was at their weddings... I can't stand the HAIR, don't give a smack what ppl say, when I get marry... my bride's going w/ raynew(sorry about the spell) nakorn style.

I would like to say in the middle way that...

Lao Sinh, Khmer Sinh and Burmese Sinh are not develop. They still stay in tradition way. But Thai silk, Chinese silk and Japanese silk are more advanced and developed. They think out of the box and designs to suite to the modern life styles.

Even in the past Thailand made the big impact to Cambodia and bring the rule of Khmer to use in court that they believe “King is God” so costumes for people in each status have the difference in pattern by their rank and they order textiles from China, India, Persia and Europe for Thai costumes which continues to this day.

If Lao silk makers do nothing to develop our silk products soon it will be disappear. We must think more creative

Atleast you know the difference  and about the hair its more of a tradition.  But like u said its 2009! and we need new hair fashion  that fit certain type of person face and the outfit they are wearing.

So prove it then.. Prove our Lao silk handworks with the new fashion as you said. Lao fashion society needs you. Can you do that without copy other and creat your own designs which not the same as in Korea, Thailand, Hongkong or Japan?

Lead us to the world's stage of new Lao modern fashion design. Don't just dreaming at home.

I'm not here to start a drama ok? which most Laotian girl or guys tend to be negative about  things or even anger like yourself. Anyways I think this website we should share our idea and thought for those who might need an idea from others.  And maybe I might even show the world our fashion design u never know until we learn about it more.  And for your comments its very rude since we are here to forums our chatty chat on here.

You dont need Einstein to tranform lao silk into dramatic fashion statement. I bought 2 lao sinh made of fabric woven from silkworm.  I had my couture re-do it into a short dress, just above the knee with spaghetti strap. Still a decent looking sunday dress. The other remains as skirt but  shortened and extra flap taken out and made into a tube blouse.  I use a black blazer over it and presto I got a great office attire, my friends envy, hence asked me to buy for them when I get back to Laos.

Lao silk has a huge potential, it can make its own statement in the fashion world if only you would allow your women to be a little off the conservativeness and allow your artists to do their job and let the creative juices flow freely.

 Way foreward Laos!

Yes like this person above me was saying we need supporter and someone who encourage another person more will help alot and move forward into a possibility of that person to do it. And we need to stop bringing our people down because it will only bring that person who don't believe you down with you. We need to encourage our people into a higher thought and a higher level not bringing them down along with u.

And I really think Lao fabric can make it into the world because our fabric are very traditional and alot of potential in multi design on almost anything.aww

Lao silk has its own distingtive design, why would anyone want to change it to look like the others. Why Carrol Cassidy help promotes Lao Silk? Because she sees its uniqueness and intricate different from others. It is of high quanlity hand woven silk fabric plus organic dye.  Look at Thai Khmer Burmese, their custom don't seem to have any unique design, just simple pattern, and also look like mass produce(manufacture by machine). I'm a guy, and I can point out which is Lao sinh and which isn't. Look at women that work at the Lao post office and banks that know how to dress Sinh properly, they look very charming. Lao silk already won over Thai silk in Bangkok competiton among Asean several years ago. It was reported on Vietianetime newspaper.  Maybe some of the poster here aren't old enough, or had been to Laos to really see.  Most of Lao kids that grow up in the US properly see people wear different kind of Sinhs at Lao temple. But of course at Lao temple in the U.S., even parents and kids wear Thai design silk.

Excuse me? Hahaha..I think you are the one who using those fake stuffs. I prefered the real original one. I bought from Hongkong & Dubai.

I knew that many of us are suing the fake one. I don't care what those people may think that I'm wearing imitation world class brands. And only for people who using the real one has good eyes to each other that we are using the real one. But for those people who are carring some of those fake stuffs always have bad eyes (like you) and how low of taste.

I'm wearing it only when I go oversea or go out for meeting people in the wedding, ceremonies, party or luxury dinner only. Ofcause I don't wear it if I go to the market or on street of Lao I knew it doesn't suite to the place.

I never laugh or think funny funny about what I have seen many poor people on street wearing imitation brands. I understand them and feel Pen Ta Lue Tonh to those people

Well...I understand and I better wear Gucci & LV instead of. hahaha...

I has a Gucci cap

I has a Gucci belt

I has a LV bag

I has a pair of Dolce & Gabbana sneaker

I has a pair of LV slippers and a pair of Armani Rubber Slippers

My next plan is to buy a new bigger LV bag is abou USD 3,000. I'm going to buy it for myself on my 30th Birthday on December

AWW too bad all that shizzle is fake and produced in china feel bad for you lol.. you sound so cheap now :(

Could i asking what the name of the store in Hongkong? because i worked at financial center in Hongkong for many years?? Name please?? I think, i do know some of the well known shopping plazas mor centers. what about in Dubai? where was it ?? and name please??

Wow, good to know that you are working in Hingkong so many years. What kind of job are you doing there? a Cleaner? a Gardener? a Goods Deliver? a Road Sweeper? Or a Dish Washer at Thai-Isan restaurant?

In Dubai, I bought an LV and Gucci at Mall of the Emirates, 2nd floor at the glass dome or near the Armani Cafe'

In Hongkong, I bought at LV shop at the Canton Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui!!!! Get very long Q to get in. But in Dubai no need to stay in Q

I don't mind if you would like to use my display picture. Just do as by your San-dahn or inborn trait. Well, Vietnamese girl's san-dahn is always like this? No wonder, people always saying about dn't make friend to Vietnamese. Now I knew it by myself that Vietnamese girl is poor civilization, they don't have their own language alphabet.
