Thai company lays fiber-optic cables to link Laos with four countries
(KPL) A Thai company, Connectsia Limited inked a joint venture with Electricite du Laos to use fiber-optic cables to link Laos, China, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The two general directors of the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Vientiane on 13 July.
This Thai company would establish a telecom company to lay the fiber-optic cables from China to Luang Prabang province and Vientiane Capital and then to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
The cost of laying the cables and maintenance of the cable network for five years is US$30 million.
Under the MoU, Connectsia Limited would be permitted to lease the electricity poles of Electricite du Laos for the installation of fiber-optic cables and it would also try to get other companies to invest in setting up similar poles to carry the fiber-optic cables.
The usage of fiber-optic cables for transmission would reduce the cost of telecommunication services and it would also make Laos a telecom hub in the region.
