I 've never learned or heard about suvanakhomkham in the textbook of Laos, have you guys learned suvanakhomkham during your high school or college. maybe i missed it, but i am quite good at history and geography.
Suvannakhomkham is the lost city long befor the Lan-xang kingdom.I heard about this lost city long time ago on Thai Tv can't remember what program and what chanel.
It is an ancient city in Bokeo province. The city existed before the founding of Lan Xang kingdom, and flourished until the Burmese burned it in the mid-late 16th century.
It contained dozens of temples, reservoirs, stupas and etc. Most of them were built during Chao Saisethathilat's reign.
Souvannakhomkham was a king dom before Lanxang, but more than that it was the kingdom that almost forget from the world of heritage. Sucannakhomkham was the kingdom of two side between the Meking river. If anyone could have a chance to go Laos and go to Borkeo province, then go to Souvannakhom kham (they must call the new name on that place because of the time have change) we will see some history around there such as the old temple in the Meking river back, some stupa and some budhha that almost destroy by the time and the river. I never have a chance to go there too. But i used to read and saw all the picture in the book that i read since i was young (i don't remember the name of the writer, but that book named on the front was SUVANNAKHOMKHAM). And that book was explain about Suvannakhomkham had from two word such as: 1. SUVANNA came from the land of Suvannaphoum= the land of the life 2. KHOMKHAM came from the word of the Khom (the light with the paper that people made to pray for the god of river and the sky) the people of this land will used this khom made by paper and the light it, and pull it up to the sky at a night time. I don't know to explain in English, but i hope enyone could imagine it. And when they light it on the Khom will look like a Kham (gold) and gold colour it was mean the colour of the god or buddha on that time. Therefore, SUVANNAKHOMKHAM it was mean the land of the Tevada...
Thanks.
P.S: I got this information from the book that i read before, i still remember this infor because i always dream that i would like to go to that place some day, although i don't remember who gave this infor on this book.

Is what Khomkham looks like? These type of lanterns are made of Sa paper. The people of Lanna would float the lanterns during the Loy Kathong and the Yi Peng festivals. Does this tradition exist in Laos?

When I was young boy living in Laos about 30 years ago I remember Loy Khatong. I would think this tradition is still being practiced.

I'M WONDERING IF THE BOOK THAT YOU MENTIONED IS THAI BOOK?
SUVANNAKHOMKHAM IS SITUATED IN LAOS. DO WE HAVE ANY BOOK IN LAO LANGUAGE?
THANK YOU FOR SAHRING THAI VERSION BUT, JUST CURIOUS IF WE HAVE ANY FROM OUR OWN SOURCE. IT SOUNDS WONDERFUL AND DRAMATISTIC. I NEVER KNOW THAT IT IS EXISTED. I WANT TO SEE SUVANNAKHOMKHAM LOVE ANCIENT CITY.
I remember I have read this story in a Lao tourism magazine that print in Thai language but I just forgot the name of the magazine. The story is about Souvannakhomkham kingdom on the Mekong river in northwestern Laos. I would search for that magazine when I have time.

The book that i read since that time was printed in Lao language, and sell in the morning market. It wasn't a thick book, just the thin small once. It didn't cost a lot of money since that time (1995). However, try to ask the seller about the book of Souvannakhom kham story from them i hope they could have some for you. Other wise, i am so sorry agian that i couldn't remember the name of a writer. Thanks and best you have a good luck.
Located on the banks of the Mekong River close to the Thai and Myanmar borders in the middle of the so-called 'Golden Triangle', this important 10,000-hectare site comprises a total of 44 vestiges of the ancient city of Nakhon Souvannakhomkham, including temples, stupas, water reservoirs and the remains of one of the largest Buddha images in South East Asia. The city is believed originally to have been established during the first millennium CE, possibly by the Mon, although much of the present remains are vestiges of the 16th century city which was established on the earlier site by King Sai Setthathirat (1550-1571) of Lane Xang. Regrettably the site has been extensively looted, and many of the remaining vestiges destroyed.

Thanks for sharing Lao Culturalprofiles. As you can see there is not much information about this old ancient City as Thai Web. I feel that we know so little about our Country History. We have many good thing in Laos that should be promote not just for the Tourist, it is for our local people as well. Instead the other our Neighbour Country have all the information about how great and wonderful site in Laos should be seen. They are making money out of Tour in Laos. Ministry of Tourist who's in chanrge won't you do somthing?
