(KPL) The Lao Women's Ruby team recently won a series of matches and became a force to be reckoned with in international women's rugby. Laos beat Cambodia for the Mekong Shield trophy match in the opponents home soil and they outplayed another two national teams, India and Malaysia in the 2009 RB Asian Women's Seven Championship in Thailand.
One of the reasons why the Lao national team is notching victories is because it is getting good monetary support from ANZV Bank, Vientiane. For the Mekong Shield Competition in Cambodia, the Lao team won with the score of 17-5 When Lao played in the 2009 RB Asian Woman Seven Championship in Thailand, it trounced the Indian team in two matches, 17-10 and 10-0 and also outplayed the Malaysian women, 12-7 and 12-7.
The Lao team tussled against the Cambodian women again in Thailand and won narrowly, 7-5 but it got a thrashing from the bigger and more experienced Singapore women rugby players, 0-25.
The coach of the Lao National Women Rugby Team is Ien Malo, an Australian and when asked to comment, he said that while the Lao women team had enjoyed runaway successes but it is still lacking in experience. He added, the team must constantly strive to improve, it must get as much match experience as possible and it must be on the lookout to learn fine rugby techniques like those shown by the Singapore women.However, going forward the Lao women will be undergoing intensive training in preparation for the 2011 Women's Rugby Seven World Cup.
