Vientiane to have new green lung on riverside

Construction of Chao Anouvong Park opposite the Lane Xang Hotel on Fa-Ngum Road , Vientiane , will be ready before the 450th anniversary celebrations of Vientiane as the capital of Laos next year.

The Mekong River Integrated Management Project is creating the park on the site of the existing Salongxay Park , but will change the name to Chao Anouvong Park because a statue of the former Lao king, Chao Anouvong, is to be built in the park, said project Head Bounchanh Keosithamma on Tuesday.

Chao Anouvong, the last king of the Vientiane monarchy, reigned at the start of the 19th century. One of the great achievements of his reign was the construction of Vat Sisaket.

Mr Bounchanh said officials must install the statue before the start of anniversary celebrations.

The park will run along the riverside from Pakpasak Technical School to the Don Chan Palace hotel, providing a place of rest and recreation for locals and visitors.

The park will have grassy areas, seating, shrubs and footpaths, with a car park to provide easy access.

The design also incorporates night-time lighting and souvenir shops.

The whole Mekong River Integrated Management Project, including construction of the park, will cost over US$37 million.

The project comprises the construction a 12.6-km embankment from Dankham village in Sikhottabong district to the Australian Embassy Recreational Club in Sisattanak district. This major development project will run for five years, from 2009 to 2013.

Other parks and recreational areas to be found in Vientiane include Patuxay, Donnoon, That Dam, Fa-Ngum, Simeuang, August 23, Nam Phou, Nong Chanh and Setthathirat parks.

“I think it's a good idea to extend Salongxay Park because this is a popular place to relax, especially in the afternoon when people have finished classes or work,” said a student from Pakpasak Technical School , Mr Khamnoy Chanmany.

He and his friends usually go to relax in the park when their classes are over and after their exams.

Many people are looking forward to having a new open space in Vientiane and he was sure local residents would make good use of it.

Nice place to hornor the forever GREAT KING OF LAOS. King Anuvong made the great example for lao people that he had never gave up his pride to the thai that treated him well  but not his people . rather fought till die than living with shame.

Didn't realized how much he suffered to save my Lao identity in Isan areas, now I know  my true king and very proud of what he had done. Hope one day I have a chance to cross over to motherland and  bow my head to his statue.

King Anouvong or we ( Lao Vientiane and Lao Isaan ) knew with his popular name of Chao Anou.         King Anouvong taught a good lesson to Siam during the conflict between Lao Lane Xang and Siam before Chao Noy Xieng Khouang arrested him and sent him to Siam before the helper troops of Vietnamese arrived to the capital Vientiane. But any way he is still be a king of Lao Vientiane and Lao Isaan for ever and ever.      Thailand wants to make movie about Gna May Mo or other name Thao Sura Naly, but got stop by Lao Isaan. We, Lao Isaan, mostly the young generation, don't much about our history. Thai government changed a lot of our Lao Isaan history, but we got told by the old..old generation beside school in Thailand.          I can't wait to see or visit our king Anouvong park, hopefully our Lao Vientiane government should allowing us to read the real story of our KING.

Is this park on the bank of the Mekong River?  Wouldn't it be prone to flooding?
