As part of preparations for the SEA Games, to be hosted by Laos in December, the Lao Football Federation is searching for a foreign coach to boost the national team's chances of success.
Federation Secretary General Soulivanh Seunvilay said “Currently we are in negotiations with a British candidate but we are yet to reach agreement between federation members and the country's sports body.”
“When we have made a decision there will be an official announcement.”
“The federation still has the services of Xaysana Savatdy, who has led the national team several times in different categories of international competition and he will continue if another coach is not found,” Mr Soulivanh said.
Under coach Xaysana the SEA Games squad will start training by the beginning of next month on an international training schedule.
Despite several failed attempts in regional competitions the team believes one day they will hold a trophy.
The federation has been trying to develop the country's footballers to a professional level. But it's not easy because we don't have a professional football league.
The footballers practise after work and in their spare time. The fans want to see an upset win as happened in Vietnam last year at the 2008 ASEAN Football Championships. Vietnamese football history changed when the national team defeated their strong rivals Thailand to gain their first ever title.
From today the eyes of all Lao football fans will be on the national team in the lead-up to big international competitions, especially the SEA Games.
The federation is developing footballers at all levels around the country, both men and women. The federation wants to see both groups in the top five of the regional rankings.
Many football fans and sponsors say they want to see the national team reach the semis for the first time in the SEA Games when they play on home soil in December.
The most important football tournaments in the ASEAN region at present are the biennial competition - the ASEAN Football Championships - and the SEA Games.
