The reason we are short is not beause we eat sticky rice. In stead it is because we do not eat enough food with protein and calcium. For example we do not eat enough meat, chichen, milk and eggs. In Europe, Australia and America people eat a lot of milk, meat, chicken. For example one person eat one chichen or a half chicken from KFC or Redrooster but in Laos we eat one chiche for the whole family. Lao teenagers in these countries (Western countries) are tall like Western people and they still eat sticky rice because they eat enough foods and their family background is perfect. In addition, when compared with Thailand, the agricultural products in Thailand such as milk and eggs is cheaper than in Laos. So never ever say that we are short and dark because we eat sticky rice. This is "You look down yourself" but you should think that we are short and dark because we are poor.
One reason is that most or all Lao people don't eat the right food. Even the rich Lao people don't eat fish, meat, vegetables, eggs, fruits, milk, vitamins complex, calcium, protein and sea animal, not just the shell fish. And most peoples in rural areas don't even have meat and egg to eat, not to mention milk and other sources of vitamins. So, not because of poverty, but the lack of knowledge that Lao people don't eat the right kind of food. Some of them eat wild animals once in a while. Most don't have chickens, ducks, geese and cows to eat. That is why Lao people are short and have frail health and get sick easily.
"GENE" my friend....Gene, if you understand and know what "gene" means,
that's the answer.
You are partly right and wrong. Gene is an undergoing changes over times that your family inherited over times, but our bodies are not all about genes. It's a combination of nutritious foods that we eat everyday and also the gene that we developed over many centuries. For example, compare my younger and me. I am 5'7" and my brother is 6' feet tall. I am dark skin and he is light skin. We are both from the same family. He doesn't like to go out much and tend to stay home. I enjoyed working outside and he doesn't. My parent are both around 5'5". We came to the US when I was 15 and he was 11. I think it is about how you take care your own body and the environment that you are in, who your family and where you came from.
Most Lao men, are you sure? Your statement is too narrow. My cousins in Laos aren't short nor dark. Are you juding from a soccer match photos there? Have you been to Laos or seen all Lao people? This is too child for me discussing this topic. Most Lao are light skin, but because of the tropical climate that Lao people live it's obvious that people get tanned. You seen Chinese and Vietnamese in Laos in term of skin? They're all look alike. No matter whehter Lao, Chines, or Vietnamese those that work indoors will have lighter skin. It's a fact. I don't believe in gene either, I believe it's what you eat. I see this 17 years old 6 foot 2 inches Lao kid whose mother is 5'7" and father 5'6". You know all the chickens and meats we consume may contains some human growth hormone and that how chickens, cattles, and many other animals that has been raised.
its a combination of lifestyle, diet, and genetics. i believe its kind of difficult to find sources of protein in laos right now because of the bird flu epidemic. but other VERY good sources of proteins are beans (like soy beans, black beans, bean sprouts), tofu, and fish. protein helps in building muscle mass. a good source of calcium is milk (hard to find in laos?). also, canned sardines (like the one in the red can with tomato sauce) have ALOT of calcium, even more than milk, because you can eat the fish's bones. calcium contributes to bone growth. also make sure you get enough sleep during puberty to give your body time to grow. and you probably already know why our skin gets tanned.
BECAUSE YOUR ARE LOOKING AT A DARK AND SHORT LAO GUY. I'M SURE IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT A DARK AND SHORT VIET, THAI,kOREAN, jAPS, YOU WILL FIND THEM AS WELL. MAYBE YOU LIKE SHORT DARK GUY. EVER THINK OF THAT.
5'-11" (205lbs.) - 1.8 M (93 Kg.) is that short for you??? I don't think so!!
As far as dark skin goes. I think is the amount of sun you expose yourself to.
You are from the North? There are more taller people up there than in the South.
No!!! I'm from the central. ThatLuang, Vientaine is my home town. I probably enhenced some of my dad's gene. My dad was about 6'1" (210lbs.) during his prime years. He was an ex-olympian for Laos.
Hyperpigmentation and Ultraviolet light caused the skin to look darker in color because melenocytes produce the color. Color is pigment. That's why black people their skin appear darker than Asian. I encourage all male and female to wear make-up or use moisturizer VU 15. It helps prevent sun damage.
5'10" light skin, light enough to have white guys told me I'm too white, and a black guy told me to get a tan. This is fact, and this happen when I was in college. Although, I love to play soccer when I was in high school and college. I rode water buffalo to the field almost everyday when I was a little kid in Laos, and sure Jaew Pa Daek was part of my daily meal as well.
The northern Lao people, generally, are taller and have lighter skin. While southern Lao are shorter and darker, due to mixes with Mon-Khmer ethnics. The southerner are more exposed to the sun and experienced the cool whether than northerners. The heights may be varied, but skin complexion is more acurate.
both of my parents are light complexion but I am dark ...due to sunbath and inherited from relatives ...since living in cali i sun bathed daily ...when i visit laos i got even darker especially my face and arms ...and the private part dark ...it's all good .....not all human created equal...
The silly topics are always got the most replies from visitors. why ? This suggested that we, sometimes, are silly and need to sit back sometimes to interact with silly people like you, me and us
i don`t know why one posts such a stupid question, instead of worrying about food shortage, bad education system , weak infrastructure, people worry about their short and flat nose and their tanned skin ????
What about penis size? Does that has to do with nutrition also? Should Lao men start eating a lot more if they want bigger penis?I don't think so. I think gene has something to do with it also.

your parent is short and dark, you want to be white and tall? nowaday ,you probably are taller than parent if you drink much milk, milk helps kid to grow taller, but it does not always.. yaoming, Nba star from china (shanghai), his height 2.26m, did you know his father is 2.08 m height and his mother is 1.88 m height.. my mother is 155, my father s 170, u guess how tall am i?
My son is just 13 years old. His hight is alreay 168 cm. I expect his hight would be 175 cm at least when he is 20 years old.
So don't think all Laotians are short. Lao food is the most delicious for me and full of protein, calcium, vitamins and so on, unlike fast food in the western countries, no doubt.

What kind of food the wealthy people in Laos eat. They eat Padek and some wild animals and vetgetables. Some of them eat western and Chinese food. They don't like to eat the nutritious food. That is why most of them are shorter than the young generation. Look at old Lao women, they are short and stunt.
