He is not Laotian. He is American citizen. I don't expect much from him. He has nothing to do with Laos either.

No doubt, you are American. Only Lao people would represent Laos. In fact, we do not want other nation or our traitors to represent Laos either, which is you need to remember.

In America, wherever I go, Lao people here recognize each other as Lao, from the motherland or not. How come its not the same for you? I don't understand this aminosity. Call me an American if you want, thats what I am, but like LaoPeople'sArmy once said, "You are my kinsmen".

Traitors. Sure.

Why should we all support him at least emotionally and encourage him to do what he is good at, instead of critize him.
I think he still has Lao pride by mentioning that he was from Laos. The reason he represents America because he is trained and gets financially support from US to get him to this level. If he wins in the olympic, he will put Laos in the map. The world would like know where he came from and who knows maybe he would help our Lao athletics in the future.
Personally, I'm very proud of him either he represents America or Laos because we hardly have a great sportsmanship to Olympic level.

There is no way he will play for Laos cos he is entitled as an American citizen. Furthermore, not many people in Laos would request for his service. Even if he win the gold medal at Beijing.

After reading the article at NBColympics.com, it seems that he prefer America more than Laos.

Such a jinx...

It is really hard for somebody to understand that he is an Lao-American person. Only Laotian who has Lao citizenship can represent Laos. That's a rule.

I just can't believe when I read some comments here.  I thought you guys in Laos have a good heart.   It doesn't matter who or what he represents.  He is Lao.   America says he is Lao native.  What about Ananda, a mixed blood guy from Australia, he is an actor in movie "Sabaidi Luang Phrabaang".  What about Ketsana Vilailack, she is from America, she will perform in ASEAN game opening in 2009 in Laos.  You should be proud of our name "Lao".   It does not matter where we are.   Lao people are everywhere around the world now.  So open your heart and think again.  It's not that he kills someone or he creates trouble and his Lao last name is everywhere.  His first name is Bob doesn't mean he is American.   Why some young Lao kids in Laos have American/English names.   Are they Americans?  If you keep doing this, you're not going anywhere.  Some 3rd Lao will eat us alive.

I think to represent a country you must be a citizen, for the olympics, I mean. So it would be impossible for him to be on the Lao team.

Some of the ideas on this forum are funny. Like those who take offense or think playing badmiton is some kind of money earner. In reality this guy must have a job, playing badmiton pays nothing.

Yes, he is Lao by birth. He migrated to America when he was 8 years old. His parents and relatives are Lao. What can he do?

In fact, in Laos there are lots of sportmens who can do this job.

I wonder why should we care about this so much, this guy is not superman, is he?

Poor guy Bob Malaythong.   He is just an innocent man.  He  is not asking to represent any thing. He is just doing his job and maybe his future career.  Go Bob.  Go do your job.  Lao-Americans will support you.

Laos always places near the end in the Olympics, everytime. Why should Laos even send a team to the Olympics? I mean, they're not Supermen.

Khankham Malaythong, the First Laotian American to Compete in Olympic 2008

This year Summer Olympic Games will take place in Aug 8, 2008 in Beijing, China and the Winter Olympic Game will be held in Canada.

Khankham Malaythong is the first Laotian American to compete in Olympic 2008 in BeijingChina. Khankham is number one in men double in Badminton and in 20th place in the world.

Khankham came to United States from Laos at age eight with family in Maryland. Khankham told VOA that he loved to play badminton even when he was in Laos; he played in the backyard or around the neighborhood. “When I first came here to the States, my brother-in-law, Mr. Seo Phengphachanh was very serious about having me to participate in some type of activities and badminton was one of them.” Khankham said.

Khankham told us that he owes a lot to his brother-in-law, Mr. Seo who sees thing in him and want him to be badminton player in the United States and the world, and Khankham stared to get serious and practice ever since.

Once Khankham became a champ for the National Junior in 1991, he was then selected to train in National Olympic Training Center in

Colorado Spring, for the next four years, where he also was attending high school and training for Olympic at the same time.

“It was a tough choice, but I am glad I did it, once I look back…it does help a lot in my whole badminton career” he adds.

After the Olympic Training Center, Khankham moved to California where he found a sponsor who gave him more chance to practice and compete in badminton. He has been competing for several years to better him and moving up in the rank where he can compete in the Olympic. Khankham told VOA that to go in the Olympic is a dream come true, but to win a medal is my ultimate goal, any type of medal would do it. The medal will help to secure my long dream of becoming a badminton coach.

Khankham concluded by saying… “I can not do this alone, I would like to thank all my family and friends, club members and every one who gives me the opportunities and believes in me, especially my parents and Mr. Seo. My parents wanted me be to do well in school, to be a doctor or lawyer; but I chose badminton, in stead of…but they are very supportive.”

I am preparing to cheer for him, but I am afraid that I would have no such an opportunity. So sad.
