Poster to campaing about AIDS in factory, Laos

The National Committee for the Control of AIDS (NCCA) reported on Friday that 30 people of a sample group tested during research in Vientiane were infected with HIV/AIDS.

The figures were reported at a meeting organised by the committee on Men who have Sex with Men (MSM).

“The aim of the meeting was to report to concerned parties that this group of people threatens to increase levels of HIV/AIDS in Laos,” the Head of the committee's Surveillance and Counselling Unit, Dr Sisavad Manivong, said yesterday.

She said the research programme began last year in Vientiane and 500 MSM volunteered to be tested for HIV/AIDS. Of these, 30 people were found to have an HIV infection.

The research targeted men aged 15 and upwards. “We went to spas, karaoke venues, nightclubs and bars. Most of the volunteers were men who ha ve sex with both men and women,” Dr Sisavad said.

She said these people posed a threat because if they were infected with the virus it was easy for them to spread the disease to both men and women.

“We have to do something to stop them increasing the number of HIV/AIDS cases in Laos ,” Dr Sisavad said.

At the meeting the NCCA asked government officials and international organisations for more cooperation to combat the problem.

The meeting reported 2,630 cases of sexually transmitted diseases in Laos between 1990 and 2007, including 1,600 HIV infections. More than 800 people died of AIDS during this period.

“The number of MSM with HIV/AIDS in neighbouring countries rose significantly between 2003 and 2005. Thailand 's 2003 figure of 17.3 percent increased to 28.3 percent in 2005, Cambodia 's 10 percent increased to 20 percent and Vietnam 's 5 percent increased to 10 percent,” Deputy Minister of Public Health Dr Khamhoung Heuangvongsy told the m eeting.

He said the fight against HIV/AIDS was not only the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Health but of every citizen.

The cooperation of everyone was needed to determine those most vulnerable to the disease and how to provide them with the knowledge to protect themselves, he said.

In the near future, the NCCA intends to expand its research on MSM to include communities in remote areas of the country.

Hey all readers, this kind of topic clearly does not attract ppl to give comments or suggestions. I think that those HIV infected should be carefully given advice to prevent themselves not to further spread this virus and not to take revenge by spreading the virus to their sex partners.

Also, safe sex education/campaign should be widely undertaken especially for those vunerable night service workers, factory workers and so on.

Lao people in Laos like to talk about entertainment, drama, music, fashion, etc..
Lao people abroad like to talk about history, politics, homesick, ba ba ba...
but they have one common thing that they like to discuss about is... Lao girls biggrin

What should we talk about this topic? I have no idea either, except just to tell a joke.

But I wonder how the men can do something with men? If men with gays, it is probably usual. 

Yes, it could be the case if they are the drug addicted. They are 100% men, but consuming the drug , so they can totally confuse who is who.
 
I don't know the alcoholics would do or not. Usually, they cannot do anything after drinking. 

However, it may be more dangerous if they combine or mix drug and alcohol. So, be careful with these two things. If we can stop these things, we may be able to limit the increasing number of HIV/AID cases in Laos.

I don't know, Dr Sisavad. HOW do we know when they will do? So, I am afraid we would fail to stop them. Just kidding idea

Statistics in the article are not complete & do not give a full picture...exactly what percentage of HIV cases in Laos is due to homosexual transmission, & what percentage due to heterosexual transmission?

Perhaps because the meeting was focused on MSM cases, the article ends up giving the mistaken impression that MSM are the main threat. In just about all countries heterosexual transmission (especially husband to unsuspecting wife) remains the main cause?

Medecins Sans Frontieres HIV/AIDS program in Laos

Friend of a friend was involved in establishing this hospital in Savannakhet, according to him quite a few cases were from Lao people who went to work in Thailand (some of them victims of human trafficking), & also some from prostitution.

Think Lao sangha had started their version of the 'Sangha Metta' HIV/AIDS education/prevention project that originated in Chiangmai...but haven't heard much about it.

of course it's on arise b/c it imported from the neighboring countries since the Laos boarder is opening to the international now. I think the Lao goverment should issue the health check for every person who wants to go to Laos to prevent the HIV or a full blown AIDS.
