Exactly why shouldn't they?

Its a means of communication, isn't it?

The current Pope was given an Ipod Nano upon is coronation.

I'm sure during the Buddha's time they couldn't have imagined such technology could have existed, so there is no ruling against or for it.

I just dont understand why they wouldn't or shouldn't be able to use it.

They are not allowed to go out at night
so I think they are not allowed to make a call to their friends, familys and lovers just to kill their loneliness in the temple.

The whole point of becoming a Buddhist monk is that you are removing yourself from society, from the temptations of the material world. A phone is a connection to that world. Last time I checked, the Pope had nothing to do with the Buddhist Sangha.

I feel that Therevada monks these day wether they are in Thailand, Laos Socialist Republic, or here in America are have an easy life. They have people to work on the temple ground, cook, and give them money. That is so easy life. In the mean time they watch TV, listen to radio, or surf the web.

The whole point of being a Buddhist monk is not to own and play with a camcorder, digital camera, TV, radio, or phone. Those area luxury. While owning these items is not a problem but using them could be. Beside a monk just suppose to have his bowl, robes, and a bag. Nothing more nothing less.

Monk is  not suppose to be involved in idle chatting.
They can not talk to female without other people in the room.
Having cell phone would make it easy to be involved in idle chatting and talking to female.

There are forest monks in Thailand. They are the most respected monks. Forest monks have the most basic life style compare to the luxury lifestyle of a city monks.

If going to live in a temple, watching TV, listen to radio, talking in cell phone, and surfing the web for music or game, why even become a monk in the first place. You can do that at home. If you decided to be ordained as monk I hope you people would justr focus on the Dhamma. Nothign else. ONLY the DHAMMA.
