The hottest Lao hip hop group L-zone stole the show at last weekend's concert in celebration of the 42 nd International Literacy Day at the National Culture Hall in Vientiane.
The event featured a day of activities, games and performances by children from schools across Vientiane , but the guests of honour were the Luang Prabang-based rappers from the C-Star recording company.
The group has three members - Mr Phonesavanh Lathsamy, also known as Ling, Ms Phonesavanh Phavichith, or Khaek, and Mr Thanosin Thinsomphone aka Noy, who was unable to attend the concert because of study commitments in Luang Prabang.
“This is our first concert in Vientiane . We are so proud to be part of this event, because we never knew that our fan base here was this big, and during the concert they rushed the stage to take our photographs, and before and after the performance many of them asked for autographs, which was a real surprise for us,” said band leader Ling.
He said this was the band's biggest concert outside of Luang Prabang and the northern provinces .
“It was beyond our expectations. I was really exited with the audience here, the fans always greeted me whenever they saw me, especially during the rehearsals the day before the concert, when they came to cheer and talk with us and ask for autographs,” Ms Khaek said.
At the concert the group performed Thandam (Black Coal) and Kik Noy Chai (Gig Feels Slighted) from their first album C-Star Hit 1 and Chep Phor Chao (Hurt Because of You) and Khoy (Waiting) from their latest release C-Star Hit 2.
Other artists from C-Star Music performing at the event were Ms Hathailath Thammachaleun, or Lilly, singing Fan Kao Hao Mak (Falling in Love with other Lovers) and Ms Chittaphone Bounphanith, or Poung, singing Soud Thihak (Sweetheart), which drew plenty of attention from the young fans in the hall.
“This was a great opportunity for me to take part in such a big event in Vientiane and perform in front of an audience of thousands. Nothing will make me forget the image of more than 100 young fans greeting me at the front of the stage,” said Lilly.
In the audience was Ms Bounmany Phoutthavong, 15. “It was such an exciting event; this is the first time I've seen my favourite band in the flesh. Until now I'd only heard them on the radio and played their video clips on my VCD.”
A nother spectator, Mr Phanith Bounpasong, 16, said “It was great for me to attend this concert. I always request their songs on the radio – they're a hot band and very friendly; they greeted every fan and gave an autograph to anyone who asked for one.”
I don't agree they look popular because we don't have many hip hop band to choose what we like. Maybe we have but I don't know because they don't promote themself or maybe they are much more better than L-zone who's know!
Only fools and dumpies like them... They've got nth to show really and the thing is they're rich or sth so that they can become singers. Let me tell you one thing, their style, rythm, songs, and voices are craps. Worse than that, the way they dance is very funny and I'm fairly sure that those young bloods in the clubs can do better than them. In general, you absolutely can't say that this band is the most popular hip hop band in Laos unless you're f*cking silly.
L.O.G and other bands are far more better than them...
