Joining ASEAN provides Laos with golden opportunity for development, said PM

Joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has provided Laos with a golden opportunity for development, said Laotian Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN and also the 10th anniversary of Laos' entry into the grouping.

Bouasone said integrating into the world economic framework is one of the effective ways of promoting a country's development and helps promote economic growth of various countries and narrow the development gap between countries.

Bouasone said that at annual ASEAN summits, ASEAN leaders discussed and put forward many suggestions and measures aiming at promoting regional cooperation and development, from which Laos has benefited a lot.

In 2004, the 10th ASEAN summit was held in Vientiane, capital of Laos. Through hosting the summit, Laos' international status has been greatly improved, he said.

Bouasone continued to say that fulfilling the goal set by ASEAN members needs not only efforts of ASEAN members but also help from ASEAN's dialogue partners including China, Russia and Japan.

The building of the China-ASEAN free trade area (FTA) is very helpful for the economic development of Laos, said Bouasone, adding that the "Early Harvest Program" which China provided to the ASEAN countries has promoted Laotian export to China. So far, China has adopted tariff reduction or exemption on 308 items of commodities from Laos under the program.

Bouasone also mentioned the 2006 China-ASEAN Expo which was held in Nanning in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, saying that leaders of China and ASEAN member countries held a summit at the expo and that ASEAN leaders spoke highly of the relations between China and ASEAN.

I really think this PM is really going to change Laos. I feel like he's more outspoken than any other Lao politicians since the Revolution.

Hello took took kon

I believe now we hear words like Free Market, Free Trade, Globalisation etc, every countries have some kind of Invesment from other countries. Many lao people fear that this country will take over LAO that country will control LAO, but I do not think so, the time of Colonisation has passed, now we are talking about Coorporation, Joint Ventures, Globalisation, Invesment.....

If chinese allowed to migrate to LAO, to live or work is a good thing in the long term, countries with large population always help Economy growing. Have a look at Australia, this country will allow people with lot of money come and settle down here, if you look around in Australia you see Novotel (investment from France) Big W, Target, Woolworth ( american ) etc....so not a single country will escape some sort of Invesment from other countries....because of Globalisation, It means you do not live by yourself but in A Community.

It helps developping the country so the same with LAO, if people come and invest in LAO it's good for LAO, because the country will benefit in many ways.

Yes, it's not secret to everyone that Lao government always welcome businessmen from around the world to invest their money in Laos. Today, hundreds projects carrying out by foreigners are  going on in various fields, like mining, hydroelectropower dam, hotels and so on. Actually, this kind of thing no one would object and never object. Everyone believes that this would help our people as well as our country to get out from poor status.
However, this would not happen automatically. What would happen if our Lao people cannot play in this game. That would mean they will become poorer. That's why Lao government have to help Lao people to stay in this game, which means they need to be trainned to be the skill people so that they can work in these projects and can earn reasonable salaries. This would make sense. Lao people would be happy with their life.

OF course Lao has rules and regulations like any other countries in the world so business people who wanted to invest in Lao must follow that guideline, but most of the time the business people always look at the law of Lao and see whether it provides protection for their investment simply their money, because every single firm which intended to put their money in Lao, they do not want to loose money. Talking about staying in the game is another matter. If you want lao people to have better skills to cope with the new changing time, there are many areas we are talking about here, let say IT jobs must have trainning or courses, to qualify for those jobs, but look at the real situation for other fields, let have a look at Plastic factory, could lao people handle any jobs there? I think lao people can work at the plastic factory.....the evident is that the factory already produced plastic goods, things such as plastic chairs and tables and other things as well....
