I think there are too many monks in Laos. Too many, YES... Instead of joining work force or go study in technical or some other vocational school, too many young men are getting into monkhood, some stay there for long long time. The country needs these young men for some work productivity, not staying in pagoda and temple, almost doing nothing, most of the times.
I am not against our religion...Just only my opinion...
Let's build up a vocational school for monks only ! Train them to be specialize on something, Ask them to be a teacher in a temple, and give free education to others...
Yes, i also think that the monk or head of temple should be more strick, if these monks want to be really be a monk. I did not against whether it is too many for what. some may have different objective or situation in their family. This is the way our society function. My point is that i support idea of having schools for these monks, ask them to really study about buddism, make research, and bring good things out from buddis gamar. Not just use temple as other means. It is very disappointed with the monks in game shop... You suppose to 'Tad kee late'. I don't know how monks are being teached in the temples to really become good monks and for people to trust about.
I think this photo was taken at Luangprabang. I acknowledge that there are a lot of monks concentrating at in this city, I understood that this has been carried on for many generations, because of the uniqueness of Luangprabang, many Travelling Holiday Programs are featuring Luangprabang very often as one of the best travel destinations to see and experience. Luangprabang has put Laos on the map of the world.
When I was last visited Luangprabang, I had a chance to speak to the monks and abbot there. They said, there are a lot of novices (young monks) only during school holiday seasons, their parents are sending them to be a monk because they wanted them to learn the Buddhist way of life, at least be able to chant Num Mol Tatsa, as far as I can see, they can do more than that. When school resumes, they all go back home, of course some of them may wish to remain as a monk, if they wanted it. These days, there are so many temptations out there for them to play, not many kids wish to remain as a novice.
There is a proverb to go with it: "If you want to bend a tree, you have do it while it's still young, when it's too old, it's hard to bend"
