Senior monk calls for separate hospital wards for monks

A member of the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Organisation's Standing Committee has called for all major hospitals in Vientiane to provide a separate building to treat ill monks.

The Venerable Vatthana Darasombath expressed this opinion to the Vientiane Times on Monday, making reference to the completion of a special building for monks at Mittaphab Hospital last year. Currently the new building provides medical services for an average of one monk per day.

“According to Buddhist regulations, monks and women should not touch each other. For this reason it's necessary for monks to be accommodated separately from ordinary people,” he said.

The Venera ble Vatthana said that a fund should be established to help monks when they fall ill as they do not have a salary from which to pay for their treatment. “Money for the fund could be put towards helping the poorer patients,” he said.

He said many years ago he went to Setthathirath Hospital to receive treatment but had to wait for many days before he could be put into a personal room, as all 20 rooms were occupied. In the end he had to be put in a public room with other patients as his health condition was so serious, but this room was occupied by both men and women.

Yet the Venerable Vatthana did not believe then that a specific hospital for monks was necessary, as not many monks were actually falling ill each day.

Deputy Director of Mittaphab Hospital, Dr Phath Keungsaneth said that each year the hospital spends between 3 and 4 million kip on treating monks. “Usually we do not charge monks for medical treatment, but sometimes the bills are paid by the patient's relatives,” he said.

The hospital often provides treatment for elderly monks suffering from problems with their bones and nervous systems, while those with heart conditions are sent to Mahosot Hospital.

“Few monks have received treatment since the hospital opened last year,” said Dr Phath, adding that some monks might actually not know about the facility since it has not been widely publicised in the media.

The funding to construct a 13 bed ward for monks was supplied by donors through the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Organisation.

Why not? Monks are human like us. Why do we have to seperate? male or female? What is wrong with the female nurse. Monks are once born from females.

When the monks are at hospital (out of the temple), the have exceptional rule (took off the 'sin') first.

It doesn't matter if the nurse is male or female... but the quality of their skills and services is the most important thing to think of.

Think about it again.... DOn't think it as a big deal please.

Lao monk call for separate hospital , you know why?? because monk is not normal person like you & me, they have many rules which called Sinh 8 or higher than us, We respect the Sinh 5..but we almost hardly respect it all. if it's possible, the govt should consider about this requirement,  Nurse and Doctor should be a man, not woman..otherwise, the Monk will lose their Sinh.

Well, I definitely agree with you to have special hospital for monks, and I do understand what Sin all the monks and us have to follow. However, providing hospital for normal people like is hardly to deal with and almost not enough. If you have a chance to go to outside of Vientiane, you will see how hard the district health workers have to work, e.g., a district of Khammuane province, the health-workers have to walk from 6 am in the morning and arrive a village in the evening at 6:pm, that is just to deliver vaccination for villagers. Therefore, I still think that dividing male and female nurses and GPs are still not a good idea. In addition, if you open a dictionary, and see what is the meaning of ‘monk’: n.a member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Can you see the living condition of the monks? it is starts with ‘poverty’ not luxury at all. By the way, I am 100% Buddhism, and so I am not intended to against Buddhism monks in what so ever. But I am sure that all ‘good’ Buddhism monks also want to see well being of sibilance as well.

So, please tell me more, I could be wrong…but that is only my opinion.

Why wondering about so small problem ? just spare one or two room especially for sick monks in every hospital and keep only male doctors and male nurses to offer their services to these monks, all the problems would be solved and no need to waste money for this purpose.
