(Where else happened in 1969 ?? ) Well, During the month of March, Air power remained the quickest and most effective means of blocking this North Vietnamese thrust forward across the plan of Jars into the mountains. Therefore, the number of the Air sorties over laos rose dramaticlly. from previous figure of about 20 each day, flown mostly by the T28's of the Royal Lao Air force base in Thailand. this was at a time when dust and smoke haze covers northern laos and makes observation of the ground extremly difficult. on the night of the March 11, North Vietnamese sappers attacked the Air field at luang Pabang, which was one of those used for T-28's. Vang pao saw that the next point to come under menace from the forces gathered on the plain of Jars would be Muong Soui, which was garrisoned by centrist troops. to delay this expected attack, he launched a raid on Xieng Khouang town, which was only lightly held by the Pathet lao but had considerable political significance, Sine it was traditional provincial capital. ( following its abandonment of Xieng Khouang , the Royal lao government had moved it provincial administration to the new dfended town of Sam Thong southwest of the Plain.) the raid succeeded in diverting Communist forces temporarily from Mouang Soui. However, the forces available to the communists were superior in number, and they resumed their siege of Muong Soui in June, finally wresting it from the government hand on June 27. smaller forces were sent ahead to probe government defenses around Sala Phou Khoun, effectively blocking the Royal Road, which has been reopened to civilian traffic only to previous month. at this point, Vang Pao again demonstratedd his uncanny ability to surprise the enemy tacticlly by moving small forces rapidly to threaten enemy supply lines. moving his man as usual by Air America planes, Vang Pao quickly landed two battalions in the rough mountain country West og Nong Het and North of route7 craft began intensive bombing of the plain, hitting the first time towns like Khang Khay and Ban Ban, in which the north Vietnamese had constructed gasline depots and antiaircraft gun emplacements.. will continue..
