How sweet it is: chocolate is good for the heart

Great news, and just in time for Easter too! It turns out that eating just 6 grams of chocolate (or just under two Hershey kisses) a day "could prevent 85 heart attacks and strokes in every 10,000 people over a decade," according to a German report in yesterday's European Heart Journal.

The news comes as a result of a ten year study involving 20,000 healthy volunteers between the ages of 25-65 in order to uncover any connection between heart disease and chocolate by the German Institute of Nutrition.

The study shows that chocolate seems "to have a more powerful beneficial effect than fruits and vegetables, especially the dark variety which is rich in cocoa and potentially protective flavonols," stated Brian Buijsse, who led the research. However, he did warn that too much of a good thing (binging on chocolate) can cause obesity.
