I like it the way it is... Just needs to improve on sewage drainage systems... improve the roads and enforce traffic laws.. why would you wanna copy other city?? vientaine is unique on its own ways and that's how i like it..

Very well said. There are many things to improve in Vientiane, but no need to copy anyone. Laos and Vientiane should find their own way of sustainable development.
New York? Hey,man!!! That's next 1000 years to go. Can you wait?
By the way, this topic is suc k and same as similar to some of the old topic that we just dream again and again. At the end..you will see just the rice field all over the place in next 50+ year ahead.
Wake up and go to help your mother to work in the rice field, man

i like vientiane to be like dubia or lots of skycrapers right now vientiane look like old city. why people want vientiane to look like the same i think vientiane should look more like modern city, not back to the stone age .............come on people
one of the specificities of Vientiane is that it's a capital city at human scale. I hope they can preserve this while developping the city
who need tall buldings? countries with many people and small land. Laos have big land with few people, why do you want lao people to live and work sticked to each other in big buildings when they can have individual houses with garden?
"right now vientiane look like old city.": what is wrong with "old city". i can show you many old cities around the wolrd that are very beautifull and happy place to live... they jus need to be correctly renewed and care.
Moreover, a city don't need to look like famous overcrowded capitals to be a comfortable and modern place.
According to me, a modern city is a city with good public transportation, no pollution, no trafic jam, good shops (huge choise at good price), good services (hospitals, schools....), peacefull places like parks, walking areas... this have nothing to do with skyscrapers. And nothing to do with stone age too.

You're absolutely right. People who think that city has to be composed of concrete, steel and glass are the one in the "Stone Age". Why so many people obsess with skyscrapers that make trees and human looks like ants? Why have more four lane roads that over crowded with vehicles that destroyed the environment with noise and air pollutions? This type of urban planning is just not sustainable and does nothing for the quality of life for its inhabitant.
Do you prefer a main avenue borderred with soulless tall buildings or a main avenue bordered with trees and small (but modern and comfortable) buildings (embassies..)?
Sorry, i personaly prefer this second one
When you go to restaurant, do you prefer a simple room in a skycraper or a beautifull place sournded with garden, with stylised architecture like this:
or this:
Sorry, i prefer what i see on theses pictures
Do you prefer walking in a street where you cannot see the sky, where the only thing you see is dirty grey, because just bordered with buildings that are thousands of time taller than a humn being or walk on a place like this :
Definitly, i prefer this one
And do you prefer a city whith just skyscrapers, sometimes beautifull, but all looking like the same, as you can see in many capital cities in the world, or visit, walk around monuments that are part of the history of the city, giving this city a spirit, a soul... specific of this country or at least of this part of the world (south-east Asia)
once again, i don't hesitate, i take what i see on those pictures.
Do you consider this is so ugly and uncomfortable?
So, OK, give tramway to Vientiane, a more modern and safe Airport, better public lights for the night, renew the oldest roads, replace the too old and broken houses by more modern ones (but real modern, not houses of the XX century, please, I mean house of the XXI century that use local materials and are able to remain cool without aircon, energy and polluton, but just because they are well engineered) more interesting supermarkets, good hospitals and emergency/rescue services, better sanitation, fight the rising delinquency....there are so many usefull things to do, but please, respect the style, the history, the spirit of this city. If you are unable to appreciate it, or just to see it, so you can live in many other place in the world that can maybe better fit your expectations, but leave Vientiane to the numerous ones that love this city.
To finish, "Stone age" is the only thing that come into your mind when you see all those pictures of Vientiane?

Education center of South-East Asian Nations, That's all I want to see. Vientiane City it self is already beautiful if you people know how to keep it. Rapid development don't mean all of you people get rich, Education and Education and I will say it over and over again.

actually i think the roads need improvement. from photos i've seen they look in poor condition. and the disgusting power lines. it's all jumbled together and who knows when it might electrocute you.
and i've noticed most people here are against high-rises. i find them beautiful probably because i'm a small city person. everyone has different views and from what i'm getting from this thread is that who ever has an idea about high-rises in laos gets the usual "ew laos doesn't need it" reply.
and to the person who said buildings will kill out nature, hello laos has nature everywhere. having some development won't kill it. the sky is going nowhere, the trees will still grow.

I think everyone agree about the need of roads improvements (and trafic regulation/law enforcment). You're also totaly right about electric (and telephone) lines: they are very ugly, unreliable and dangerous. But i saw the same in many countries, even in the USA....
This is something funny for me to see when i go to Vientiane as a tourist, because it's unusual for me, but yes, definitly, this is something that should be improved for the benefit of people living there.
About tall buildings, the problem is not i don't like them. Tall buildings can be beautifull. I like to go to Paris-La Défense sometimes ; i did enjoy to discover Manhattan a few years ago... If well engineered, they can be "happy places", but building good skyscrapers mean accept and consider many technical constraints and safety rules. this cost a lot of money, so it's economicaly realistic only for very rich countries that absoloutly have to concentrate a lot of activities in a small place. If Laos begins to enrich and getting money to invest, they have many more important priorities than building skyscrapers that would bring near no special benefit to the country.
Moreover, if you talk with lao people, most of them don't like to live or work in tall buildings. Lao people prefer to stay closer to the land, to their Earth.... that's also their culture, and the evolutions of a city should respect the expectations of its inhabitants.
Last thing i regret about tall buildings is that they are all built with the same "international style". Those kind of buildings never respect local architecture and urbanism. Little by little, all the big cities in the world look like the same. This mean all those cities are loosing their soul.
Look at the new Talat Sao : ok, the old one was not comfortable and needed to be renewed, but look at the new one: this just look "nothing".... just a shopping mall as you can see everywhere in the world, very common. We cannot say it's ugly, but it's not beautifull neither... it's just nothing... Old Talat Sao style was typicaly lao. This had a sense for the country, for people working there, for tourists buying there, it was a "symbol" of Vientiane. New Talat sao will never be a symbol of anything.... This don't mean "do nothing", but there are many ways to improve what exists without destroy it (preserving the work of your ancestors), or even build totaly new buildings (on "empty" places), modern safe and comfortable, but that really integrates into the existing urban style, respects the basis of the local architecture, respect the culture of the country, etc... The future phase 2 of new Talat Sao is on this point a little bit better that the existing phase 1 : they integrated a few architectural details that remind the beautifull old buildings.... this is far from being enough, but anyway, it's better than nothing.

For instance, I like a lot the 2 new markets they built in Pakse: they are modern and comfortable building, but they are typicaly lao and respect the style of the city where they take place :
SOME PEOPLE IN HERE WORRIED TOO MUCH ABOUT NEW LOOK FOR LAOS! WHAT FOR? THIS IS WHY A LOT OF NEW BUILDINGS IN LAOS DON'T LOOK EXITING AND IT MADE ME FEEL LIKE LAOS TODAY THE SAME AS YESTERDAY NOTHING. EVERY 3 TO 5 YEARS I VISITED LAOS IS NO LONGER EXITING, EXCEPT FOR SEEING MY RELATIVE OVER THERE.
IF I DON'T HAVE A RELATIVE IN LAOS, AFTER A SECOND VISIT...THAT'S IT FOR ME.
who care if you don`t come stay there where you are die in there too ,take lao blood from your body out and changing citizen too , but I don`t like your pass port say AMERICAN CITIZEN BORN IN LAOS I don`t like to see that I love laos my country et lost man

You can say what you want but the truth is you are trying hard to be like others accept no knowledge, your brain is the size of my tiny bugger, I pity you.

Cheap Chinese Goods? I think you are an oversea "Lao Luem Tou". You are living in high civilization country but you forgot that Lao is still not even producing our own indentity goods even a single brands. And still still import other cheap goods to use in the country as we can not efford to import other expensive and high profile like in Wester world. "Lao Luem Tou"
I never said that the new thalat sao is cheap. I said that it looks cheap. Buildings like it are dime a dozen. You can find it in almost any city of the world, including the city that I live in. Why settle for mediocrity? This is nothing more than lazy and chaotic urban planning. Take a look at this building below. It's a modern yet it screaming out loud, "I'm in Laos."
United Nations Head Office
Ateliers de la Peninsule was selected by the United Nations through an international design competition for the new United Nations Development Programme representative office in Vientiane. The challenge in this project was to deliver a 3,000 square meter office building in one of the laotian capital city's most prestigious locations at the top end of Lane Xang avenue. Surrounded by landmark monument Anou Savali (Vientiane's Arc de Triomphe), the Prime Minister's office and other ministerial buildings, the United Nations office is modern in design while roof structures and the entrance hall recall Lao traditional style. The overall construction pattern ensures constant natural cool air circulation, offices overlook a sumptuous landscaped patio filled with natural light and surrounded by shaded outdoor corridors. The building complies with strict environment and security standards. The project also included interior design and sourcing of office furniture. The building concept did consider energy saving issues as natural light use for the office and exposed building facades protection toward sunbeams to decrease the wall heating. The design did use electrical aluminum louvers installed on the West exposed building facades which are allowing both sun heating and security protection. The project received the UNDP Green Department award for succeeding in this environment protection design concept.

i understand with many comments which you need our country much developed as other countries but please note that fast developed may bring the difficult problems such as pollution, traffic jam, the city planning and other. as you may know the lessons of developed countries if we could learn more from them and bring to use in our country i think Laos would be better country than other big cities in the world.

You are totally right
Most of big cities in the world were built during the XXth century. All people living in such cities suffer now from all the mistakes done: pollution, overcrowded places, crime and delinquency, lost of soul and identity...
So if you want to imagine what should be the future of a city that start now it's development, you should carrefully analyse what were done in other big cities in other countries, idendify the mistakes and do everything you can to avoid reproducing the same mistake. This mean your future city should not look like any of the existing capital cities in the world but find it's own way!
i'm looking for the full documentation about "2030 Vientiane Master plan" (recently validated by authorities). do anyone know where is could find this?

If Vientiane is going to be like this , I prefer Vientiane to be like 35 years ago. If the outbreak occurs, there will be no one survive if the city will be like this.
Why not make Vientiane into a mega suburb neighborhood fill with tropical trees and plants???? Skyline isn't necessary since people rather have there own backyard and playground of there own. Also modern condo and mid sized apartment would be great for business as long, as it is international standards for those wanting to live in Laos for permanent resident and retired. Also housing around the lake or River side is another great business as well.
I like Vientiane will be a Paradise forever. Does it make sense for your mind?
Aliens
What would you expect million of Chinese and Vietnamese multiply like rabbits in Laos.
I hope Lao people don't be stupid ideas like that, they love their lands and they care their properties to be beautiful as a Paradise, why are you worry such things?
