(KPL) Singapore awarded the 2009 Singapore Scholarship to Miss Viengdalat Somphet to read undergraduate arts and social sciences at the National University in Singapore. She would be joining her brother Mr Chipaseth Sompet who was also awarded the Singapore Scholarship, albeit in 2008 and he is now reading Computer Science at Nanyang Technological University.
The ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to Laos, Mr Jeyaraj Benjamin William hosted a farewell tea for Miss Somphet and her family on July 16.
During this farewell tea Mr William said that the scholarship is part of the Singapore government’s long-term objective of assisting its ASEAN neighbors to develop their human resources.
He added that the ambassador said that the Singapore Scholarship is offered to outstanding students in ASEAN to study in Singapore’s universities so as to assist its ASEAN neighbours to develop their human resources.
The ambassador emphasized that this Scholarship also aims to promote friendship and spirit of comradeship among students of ASEAN countries through the experience of living and learning together.
Since 1999, 21 Lao students have been awarded this Scholarship and they read a wide range of subjects, such as arts and social sciences, computing, business administration and engineering
