Vietnamese soccer fans carry national flags while celebrating on the street in Hanoi December 24, 2008. Surprise qualifiers Vietnam dented Thailand's hopes of a fourth Southeast Asian championship title with a stunning 2-1 away win in the first leg of the final on Wednesday. The victory sparked wild celebrations in Hanoi, with the streets gridlocked as cheering fans waved national flags and motorcyclists sounded their horns. REUTERS/Kham (VIETNAM)

HANOI, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Vietnam scored a last gasp second-leg equaliser to finish 1-1 with Thailand and clinch the Southeast Asian championship for the first time on Sunday.

With the match tied 2-2 on aggregate and seconds away from extra time, the dangerous Le Cong Vinh leapt high above the Thai defence to head home Nguyen Minh Phuong's free kick and spark wild celebrations at the My Dinh stadium.

Three-times champions Thailand, upset 2-1 in the first leg, had most of the chances and went ahead after 21 minutes when Teerasil Dangda beat the goalkeeper to head Sutee Suksomkit's free kick into the net.

Thailand paid dearly for their misfiring and conceded a disputed free kick deep into stoppage time, which Vinh flicked into the net to earn Vietnam their first international title.

game today, Thailand played good, but just unlucky
Vietnam wins the champion is a good for them and ASEAN, We can see now the level of Asean football now is not so big big difference. hopefully the weak team such as cambodia, Laos can go to the top of AFF as well.

The level is not big, but it just stay the same...

Thailand, Vietnam,Singapore and Indonesia alway in the semi-final, Laos, cambodia Philipine and Brunei always got eliminated.... and conceded to stronger components 4 or 5 goals... it is just the same like 10 years ago....

Vietnam is sharper... that made them a champs... bravo.. hopefully, we could really learn how to be strong like our closest ally... Vietnam..

I think it's not because of that, the Lao boys never eat the sticky rice when they are away, thats why they lost the game, let's see in seagame laos...
