I think the following sector are highly appreciated our government efforts, namely : - Peace and stability - transportation development from North to South and each provincial admin -Electricity -Communication system - food security -education...
The important thisng is we had diplomatic relation with more than 130 countries in the world ( 192 Countries ), we joined ASEAN, we hosted the big events such as, 10th ASEAN summit, Francophonei Meeting attended by 53 Countries...
I would say Education Before we have very few schools and colleges, Now these schools are spreading across the country
However, there are still a lot of challenges that we need to get over it, such as Corruption, digital divides, rich and poor, child labor, enviornmental problems and so on
All opinions were positives on gorverment side, apologize me and please convince me about vietnamess come to have residence in Lao;the day by day incresing .event every I make exercise in Patooxai:they do not speak any crealy lao to me,just zawaidee ai???also big stept??do hope you get my point.
Good job for allowing the foreigners exploit Lao national resources but where are the benefits to Lao people? Where the revenues are spent? Did Lao people get anything from these foreign investments and exploitations?
Not all comments are positive. My is the third posting so read it carefully. You are absolutely right though that laos is being exploited like never before when we are talking in term of economic and natural resources. Most, if not all of the big projects that have been granted to extract the country natural resources, have foreigne workers make up the bulk of their employees. Check out the article below. Where are the lao people who want to work? Well, they are squeaking by in the service and agriculture sector that earn them less than $2/day and if they want to earn more than they have to go work in Thailand. I love to see Laos being developed and mordernized without the destruction of its environment or the oppresion of its people.
Vietnam PM visits Sea Games Village in Laos
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung (1st, R)
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Sunday visited the 2009 Southeast Asian Games Village Project, which is under construction in the Lao capital of Vientiane.
Work on the 25th SEA Games athletes’ village, which is being built by Vietnam’s Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint-Stock Company (HAGL), began on August 1.
Company Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc said, “Although the weather conditions haven’t been very favorable, almost 700 workers, 95% of whom are from Vietnam, have been working hard and have completed more than 45 percent of the work.”
“With support from the Lao government, HAGL will surely finish the project and hand it over to the Laotian organizers of the 25th SEA Games in June next year,” Duc said.
PM Dung praised HAGL workers and engineers for their efforts to complete the work on the five-hectare site.
He said because the project was of great significance to the friendship between Vietnam and Laos, the construction process should be safe and the work of high quality in order to impress the Lao people.
HAGL is sponsoring the US$19 million 25th SEA Games Village Project with $4 million in nonrefundable aid and an interest free loan of $15 million, which will be repaid within three years.
The project, which will be handed over to Laos’ National University after the sports event, will have 992 rooms in eight four-story blocks, a 1,200-seat dining room, a central hall and functional rooms. The site will also have football fields and basketball facilities.

you might be right, but did you count yourself, where are you enjoy your life? nowsday the world changes, communication and relation and everything changes.you are in the USA, at you comment, i did not see your perfect ankit, as you would like the I make exercise in Patooxai:they do not speak any crealy lao.who knows, he/she might be a visiter, a foreign worker or who knows what are they doing there. the same question can be asked ourselves, what are we doing here in the USA. we live here for over 25-30 years and still speak broken ankit!? comon man i understand what do you want to say. for me i would like to enjoy my life with my family and would like the same to our relative and our brothers and sisters in our old land. peace, security, then they will have time to develope the country. not like the old day = fighting each other for the foreign interest and are very proud for that. i see it as stupid ever the leader can be.
refer to the freedom to speak or expression, iin our ( lao ) culture and tradition and law, every one can speak what you wanted to say but you much also respect the rights of other people too. even in your family you should and much respect your wife and you can't do what you wanted to do and one way talking and thinking, Asian vulue and western value are titally diffirent. I appreciated a lot the efforts of our current government. in the past we did not have any thing, even TV progamme, Telephone, mobile, good road, school, water supply, electricity. mining sector and we have been recogned by almost countries around the world, we become the membe of United nation, ASEAN and other international organizations , even USA's government also had been recognized and welcome our efforts and succes of our Government .refere to the migration or foreigners comming and living in our courty and recogned that now is the age of globalization, therefore we cannot stop the movement of migration and in-migration matter and it be come the global issue , no single ountry can't stop it , for example: in USA there are 20 percent are migration and foreigners including lao people are more than 200.000 people ), 1,5 million foreingners living in Switzerland ( Switzerland's populationis is only 7,5 Million), they are 3 miilion foreigners living in Japan... please don't worry we will lose our identity and culture, Government will never and never to allow the foreigners to control and take over our land, we have law, guidline and the relation is based on sate to state and it not based on the ideology and special parthner or friends.

Lao hak sad"
Ummh, I read the below article last week from the Guardian in the UK even before you posted these words. It looks like the wholesale of Laos is well underway.
The resentment rises as villagers are stripped of holdings and livelihood
The blackened tree trunks say it all. Three times in recent months these tracts of palm oil plantation have gone up in smoke, along with plants and machinery. The neighbouring coconut operation suffered the same fate, but there the Thai owners replanted. Here, the Malaysians had had enough and called it a day.
The sabotage is a testament to growing local resentment at the way land is being sold off to big foreign investors with deep pockets. At face value, leasing agricultural concessions looks like a godsend for Laos, a poor country eager to shed its stigmatic designation of "least developed country."
With a population of less than six million in a country half the size of France, land is its biggest asset. And as food and commodity prices have surged over the past 18 months, neighbouring nations have been snapping up vast tracts on long leases. "The situation is completely out of control," said one foreign advisor in Vientiane. "It's a fire sale. People in power are just desperate to get their hands on the money so they don't miss out. For the companies coming in it's a massive land grab."
Recently, Chinese officials visited Vientiane seeking to lease 1m hectares for rice. Flush with cash from oil that hit $150 a barrel, Middle East states had the same idea, trying to secure 200,000 hectares. Kuwait's prime minister and foreign minister paid two visits in two months.
"Countries were traumatised by the food crisis," said a foreign land consultant in Vientiane. "They've money to spend and they're shopping around.
"It doesn't matter that oil prices have gone off. They feel this food problem will come back to haunt them. Even if they start something now, they know it'll take years to reach 100% production."
Already between 2m and 3m hectares of land - as much as 15% of Lao territory - has been signed away. Some leases stretch for 70 years. Nationwide, there are at least 150 international agricultural projects. Just six projects valued at £8m were agreed in 2002, but that jumped to 39 worth £262m in 2006.
Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian companies dominate the southern lowlands where rubber, sugar and cassava plantations carve out vast swaths. Japanese, Indian and Scandinavian farms cultivating fast-growing eucalyptus and acacia trees for paper pulpwood forests dot the centre. Chinese operations lease the most land in the north, principally to grow rice or rubber trees.
The desperation to find land means that village farmers have been stripped of their holdings for minimal compensation. In a country where most are subsistence farmers living on less than $2 (£1.33) a day, some can no longer feed themselves.
Tamang, 56, moved to a village built by the Japanese pulp company Oji Paper when the eucalyptus plantation was developed on his land. His children attend the new school, and he works up to seven days a month on the plantation for £1.40 a day. But the rice paddy that was promised as compensation has yet to materialise. "We're waiting for the government to give us land, but we've heard nothing yet," he said.
Part of the bonanza is explained by the pitiful prices charged for buying up Laos. The norm of $3 to $9 a hectare each year is a fraction of the market rate. "The low rates of land leasing in Laos [...] were well under commercial value or sometimes free," wrote Glen Hunt, a researcher from Sydney's Macquarie University.
Dismal prices are due to the chaotic nature of the "opaque" bidding process that enables Lao district, provincial and national level officials to strike deals. Failure to grasp true land values as Laos shrugs off socialism contributes. But officials desperate to line their own pockets care little for Laos's coffers.
Martin Stuart-Fox, a retired professor and Laos specialist from the University of Queensland, casts the trend not as one of rich foreign countries grabbing what they can, but of local greed. "It's simply a matter of greed. Officials are grabbing what they can. Companies need land and are prepared to pay well. It all goes under the table."
Recognising the system was out of control, the prime minister, Bouasone Bouphavanh, declared a moratorium last May on large land concession allocations "to address the shortcomings of our previous strategy". But the stop order was ignored.
Yet it is becoming clear that Laos does not even have vast amounts of spare land.
Oji Paper was in principle granted 50,000 hectares - and its regimented eucalyptus forests line the roads of Bolikhamxay - but is struggling to find even a tenth of its allocation.
"It's a myth that Laos has so much virgin land," said one expert. "There's no land left. Plantations promised 20,000 hectares or 50,000 hectares can't find it when they survey. They might get 50 hectares here or there. But they want huge plantations. The dream was Brazil."
I rate it EXCELLENT for being super expert at begging for money from every countries.
I rate it EXCELLENT for selling Lao people land and resources.
I rate it EXCELLENT for destroying and not respecting Laos heritage sites.
I rate it EXCELLENT for poluting the air and water from the factory and mining.
Please provide some evidence to support your claims. Why should you just repeat your father' words, you are an educated person, don't you?
Open your eyes before you open your mouth to consume something. Otherwise you would be not more than the primary school education person, no doubt. That would not suit to call you an American man, believe. Please act wisely man, now is a 21 century.

You people really need to open your eye. Don't just see $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Look at preserving our culture, land, tradition and heritage. I am not against anything Laos government or Lao people want to do. I am just pointing out the what other outcome of a decision. There aren't just one views. My presence here is not to change the government change it way. I just want people like you see other point of view. This are not my view. These are the views of others that I am just pointing them out.
The destruction to the environments are real as pointed out my by Eravanh Boungnaphalom, the Acting Director of Mining Concession Management Division from Department of Geology and Mines at Ministry of Energy and Mines.
Better. Laos has peace, is thriving from torn war. People have jobs, education, money to spend, drive more cars than motocycles. People have more freedom to do. Foods are not short. More charity organizations step in. More tourists coming in. Least but not last, Laos has a face in the world's map. Please my Lao fellows, protect our reputation. I give 2 thumbs up.

Better for peace, stability but laos has much problem about society: drug problem for student, prostit. poor and rich, small salary....
From 75 -2009 Just a little bit better than 1946-1975, Precommunist only did a lip services that's all.So is After Communist, But atlease they did a little here and there,
I am living in the US. I have gone back to Lao 5 times now. I love it. I think everythings are better than before. Remember! before you critisized the Lao Gov. Lao been there for 1000 of years. "The old leaders that they call them self with high political rank do no **** for the country but putting money in their pockets.
Progress for the last 33years speaks for it's self. Thanks to so call "Communist gov." =people are free to better them self if they choose to work hard. where before if you go into the morning market back the the 70's the merchants are mostly foreigners(India, Viet, Thai and Chiness) if, you go there today they are own mostly by Lao. " no one will argu with me here, this is fact"

We are moving forward with prosperity.
you are right, I like the girl sells the goods at the morning market, they are sexy and nice dress with lao-skirt and gold blabla, the most of them are lao mixs with viet and chin. they become lao now....
Thank you for agreeing with me. I hate to hear people trashing my people, my country. even though i am now US citizen but, i will always have lao blood. " I LOVE MY BIRTH COUNTRY IF, PEOPLE DON'T HAVE BETTER THINGS TO SAY ABOUT LAO STAY THE HELL OUT"

I agree with you ,I am Lao- American also . To whom who criticize and complain so what could you do for your country ? You know Laos is not full of gold and diamond mine and oil.
Please, it is not matter how much who own whom and it is none of our business any way so why should we care? Loas is poor country and don't have oil wells and a lot of diamond mines and a lot of gold mines so why you criticilze so much . Why don't you come up with some ideas that would help the Lao kids to get education that is the only way that I see to make Lao rich and strong Pee Nong. Only high education and develop brain and mind that are the key to solve Laos problems Pee Nong Lao. High education and know to trade and know to build and invent the technology . ( Brain and mind that what Laos need ) so support me raising fund helping the Lao kids and building schools and buy computers for Lao students in Laos.
i cannot talk for the 33 past years.... i know only the 8 past years.
I saw many great improvement: infrastructure, comfort, sanitation/healthcare, "opening" of the country, business oportunities....
But at the same time, Laos is importing many bad things from other countries: pollution, "people spirits" corrupted by money gain, trafic jam (uncomfortable, lose time + polution), crime...
i hope Laos can continue to develop, but at the same time protect itself better from all the bad things that are developed a lot in most of other countries... that is very important for me.... So Laos can become "modern Laos", but will always emain Laos.... not just a country like all others, with many good things but also so many bad things.
Lao government should copy the Japanese government how they develop and run the country . After world war ll Japan was broke so do Germany so look at these two countries now. Laos should copy their constitutions , laws and how their mordern and develop and educated Japan . Japan is good example to copy.
The Gentleman/Lady, Who said It was not matter how much who own whom and it none of our Business so why should we care??? Well, here if you live in the state like me you probably care it too, Because last year i pay my taxes more than $19,000. just a little bit more than last year, and if you live in Laos that would be different story, Why ?? Because in Laos if you make 500 dollars you take home 500 dollars. there's nothing go off for social security, medicare,or even income-tax, and if you live in the state like me you probably don't like if our government borrow too much from other country, Who do you think will pay for the debt that our government own?? simple!!! You and Me...
Before we rate progress in Laos over the past 33.8 years, i would like all of us compare Laos to our neighbour country, how much they have changed, what kind of progress do they have. If you put yourself in the neutral zone and look at the progress that we have done in the past 33 years, i agree with all of you that; there are alots of things have improved , and at the same time there are alots of things that have gone backward. Yes, we have peace ,we have stable Government ,Economics, Educations,Transportations and communications all are growing. But on the otherhand 33s years without conflict,we still have our citizens tried to leave country. Society problem have spreaded all over from cities to the countrysides, illegal drugs ,corruptions. Young children have to leave school early because parents don't have enough money to support them. People leaving country legally and illegally to find work.Human traffiked and prostitute are evrywhere. More lands and natural sources have been destroyed like never before. Gap between poor and rich, cities and countryside have gone bigger and bigger So, according to all of these above; i would rate the progress in Laos over the past 33s years As FAIR ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 )
the progress was corruption and nothing really. we cannot even build stadiums with our own money. no aids to schools, the people, and our precious heritage sites. communism was and is a bad bad mistake. we didn't even get a chance to see our royal government develop the country. from then till now, it would of been a big development. the population in laos is around probably 7 million now, and there are over 60 million lao overseas. think of how much progress would of been made, and those 60 million lao would love to help develop the country if it were not communist. also think about all the teachers, construction people, educated people like doctors, business people, lawyers, engineers, architects, and even government officers, police forces, military soldiers, and also athletes, that left laos or that came out (the new generation) of that 60 million. we would all be living in a great nation right now. even greater than thailand and vietnam most definitely. im bringing this up in the athletics as well because all you guys have complained how there are not enough people there and that is why you guys have been sucking. year after year after year, laos gets dominated in everything, especially football. every year i hear something like.. we are still amateurs.. o.. not enough time together.. laos is small.. we are war torn.. ugh.. enough of this crap! its all bull****. no more excuses! how much longer is it going to be until our teams improve? the football team have been playing together for a good 8 years now.. isn't that enough time for you to get to know each other? laos is small? we have a pretty good size land, the netherlands are way smaller and less populated, but have managed to get to the world cup almost every time. even bahrain is the size of rice and they are doing well.. war torn? still? that was 34 years ago.. iraq is still war torn but managed to win the asian cup. wow this amazes me. is it the players? why can't we find 22 or 23 players out of 7 million people. that's kinda sad.. 60 million would sure help, but come on.. 7 million is already a lot of people. make progress!! and also the many sports teams that say that lack funds and support. well then that really tells you something about your government not sharing the borrowed dough. not even wanting to help out their own national teams when they say we are all one. not! and to that douche that keeps ranting about talking **** to HIS own people. you are lao, and the person who you were talking **** to was obviously also lao (hence his username was LanXang), so who is talking **** to who? think about that first before you type.
Yes, right, very few people present here have witnessed development in vientiane 30 years ago, so few people can compare the former vientiane and the actual vientiane city, talking about sport, football for instance, laos was at the second or third place in south east asian countries, we were only afraid of Mianmar national team (in that time Birmany's national team) the only big team that could beat lao national team and other sports as Judo, teakwando we have never been at the bottom of the list and laos at that time had a population of just two and a half millions. i was here and still am here to witness what had happened and will happen to laos... for what ? only to relate it to my children and grand children...i forgot to mention the level of education....
Not much only more Vietnamese and Chinese workers taking the jobs away from Lao people and Lao people lost their land to farm from flooding and rubber trees. Only selfish corrupted government officials getting richer and the Lao people getting poorer, Soon and later Laos will become China province.
