Smuggled Thai cattle sells at firesale prices

(KPL) Farmers in Vientiane province complain that they were not able to sell their cattle in the local market as the Thais are sending many of their fleshy cattle for sale in Laos at more competitive prices.

In general, the cattle from Thailand cost 25 per cent less than the cattle in the province.

Mr. Kham, who doesn’t want to reveal his full name, said yesterday that the cattle sold in his village were from Thailand and they were either smuggled through Khammouane province or imported through legal means to Laos. “Each year we sell roughly 7,000 cattle but for this year we only manage to sell 500 of them,” said Mr. Kham.

He also said to the KPL reporter that this is tragic for some farmers as they suffered from the recent flood and now they found that they were not able to sell their cattle to compensate for the loss of income from their rice crop.

The officials in Khammouane and Vientiane provinces were not able to confirm the authenticity of such information.

“The cattle we normally import were not for sale in the province but for transit to Xiengkhouang province and then for further export to Vietnam,” said the Head of Livestock Division, Vientiane Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Service, Mr. Saythong Phimbao.

” The cattle that normally transit through the province were identified as cattle that originated in Khammouane and Saravane provinces but we are not certain if they were cattle imported from Thailand,” added Mr Saythong.
