Vietnamese firm Long Thanh Golf Club and Residential Estate will invest US$1 billion in a golf course construction project in Laos, an official from the firm told Thanh Nien Daily.
Under a memorandum of understanding recently signed by chairman of the firm’s management board and general director Le Van Kiem, and Vientiane mayor Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, the project will commence in a 500-hectare area in Vientiane capital next month, said Kiem’s assistant Pham Thanh Minh.
The company will strive to accelerate the project, which includes the construction of a 36-hole golf course, a 5-star hotel, a hospital and a school, so that the golf course’s first 18 holes will be complete by 2010 to commemorate the 450th founding anniversary of Vientiane capital, he said.
wow!!!! 36 holes golf courses and 5 stars hotel... i wonder if they choose the location of this project yet.. i can't wait to go play golf there and i hope it is not tooo expensive..

Will the Vietnamese hire the local Lao people ? or the Vietnam will bring their own workers from vietnam to work just like the Chinese ? So it does not matter what rank number is the number 1 or 2 and three invest in Laos . Chinese build stadium , dams , casinos and bring their own workers and don't hire local Lao people. Local people don't have land to farm because of the government sold the land to the chinese for development . The Chinese don't hire them . Should the government fight for the Lao people for jobs and stand by the local people ? Do the governent care about the poor local people ?

I believe this project is 1 billion us dollar, and will take around 12 years to complete everything, golf course, hospital, schools, and a 5 stars hotel. 12 years to complete.
Oh I left out 1 more thing, beside golf course, 5 stars hotel, schools, hospital, there will be a luxury residents area as well, that's why it will take 12 years to complete this project, according to the news, the golf course is going to be built near Vientiane so there won't be much forest to be lost.
In my humble opinion!! Building the golf course is a lot better than let the Chiness, vietnamess and the thai people lease the land for fifty year or more. Meanwhile some of the laotian do not have the land of their own. Better yet let the foreigners dig up all of laotian natural resources in the name of prosperity.
what you saying it...it is better just to let the land sit there and benefit nothing out of it. why so negative about the oppotunity....look what kind of job will creat for the people in that area, it could improve life style and maybe boot the economy as well. what if the land just sit there what could that benefit anything....it has been sit there since who know and no one doing anything to it till now. yes it could afffect things here and there but over all it will improve life and city....
a big part of this land is used by local people to grow rice to feed Vientiane population. This give them job, autonomy (they are their own boss). Compensations are ridiculous (maybe it is justified if they don't own the land, but anyway ridiculous: those people will loose everything.) so things are not so simple: money in one hand, loss in other hand... difficult to know if the overall balance is good for local people.... and what will you do with the people who will loose something in this project?
