Muay Lao, the forgotten art of kickboxing!
We do have Muay Lao (Lao boxing) in many provinces, but what are the differences between Muay Lao and Muay Thai. Are they the same same style ?
When someone ask you this question, can you answer ?

My non expertise knowledge of this sport and from what I know....Muay Lao and Muay Thai is essentially the same. It originated from Muay Boran. I really think they lable it to distinguish it between western style boxing and this style of boxing. But the name, Muay Thai, just stuck and now known worldwide. The rest in history.

Muay is Tai art it originated from Tai like Tai language Tai culture , it not from Khmer.
I have seen Khmer doing propaganda Muay is from Khmer in wikipedia youtube and other site, and now Lao site.
Why Khmer doing this?
What do you want?
Steal Tai art?

PS. Muay Lao and Muay Thai have some different like Lao and Thai language but same root.

I'm not Khmer I'm Irish!!

It was originated in Cambodia it's a known fact if you do Muay Thai.

If you don't believe look at tis article its a fighter who trains in Vientiane for a day doing Muay Lao.

The head trainer and him talk:
“How is Muay Lao different than Muay Thai?” I asked.
“It’s exactly the same.” Said the Adjarn.
“Cambodians are angry abut the name Muay Thai. They feel they invented kickboxing and it should be called by the Cambodian name, Bradal Serey, not Muay Thai. What do you think of that?”
Without a second’s hesitation he answered, “Muay Thai was invented in Cambodia, but Thailand has the money and got famous.”

So there you go...

There are different rules between Muay Lai Lao and Muay thai

Muay Thai can use any parts of body to attack the opponent, but Muay Lai Lao is limited.

Muay Lai Lao can't use the elbow part to attack
Muay Lai Lao can't hug to fight as Muay Thai,

Maybe am  i wrong?

dude i think muy lao and muy thai originated from cambodia its pretty easy to see buttt its a lao thai cambodian fighting art. but the thais had enought money to use propaganda and it became just a thai thing. i dont think its fair for thailand to claim a fighting art that is shared between these 3 countrys which are essentially the same fightin styles just with different names. and perhaps a little alterations in each country.

my 2 cents.

it should be known as the southeast asian form of martial art.

Muay Lai Lao is more of a Muay Thai +Kung Fu. This is called "Seur Lark Huang". You see some people perform during the new year festival parade. The music accompanying this art is more upbeat like " Thoom Siang Thoom Siang" instead of sleepy beat like the Siamese counterpart where is go like this "art ast, art ast", you know what I mean. But Muay Lao is pretty much like Muay Thai when it's fought in the ring. Lately, I've run into some Lao site where there  is comment from a Khmer person that accusing Lao people still it's land, it's language, and culture. I was like this Khmer person is messed up in the heard.
Also, I read a comment on YouTube relating to Lum Saravan, and again the Khmer claim that Saravan its' Khmer, and not only that they claim that morlum is theirs. I'm like **** up.   I've known some Khmers since junior hight school, and I get along with them very well. I also know that there were never a problem between Lao and Khmer that I know of historically or in life until I ran into some of these comments. It just shows that some of these Khmers are not secure at all, why? Because how many Lao people in here or that you know that like to go to other ethics forum and make such comments. Maybe Bruce has been to Cambodian website since he loves to learn what the Khmers are up to, yet high rises..Skyscraper!!!!..

Irish...now we have one more nationality joining in this forum :)

are there forms of muay boran or muay lao that use weapons e.g. sword, spear, etc?

during the Pi Mai Lao parade, there will be some guys demonstrating a style of fighting using two swords...what martial art is that? interesting that it's the guys who do that - for Chinese wushu it's usually ladies who fight with two swords, not the guys.

Maybe it belong to t hem at one time but before that it belong to the Cham. Another thing, the country of Cambodia of today was a location of another great civilization (dispute). Khmer kingdom was just north of it and part of present day Laos. The (Khmer) conquer that great kingdom and the Cham kingdom to make their empire. So we are all related.

But Lum saravan is not ancient music with heritage to Khmer. It is Lao creation. There are Lao people in Cambodia I bet that how Lum Saravan became popular there.

Lao culture, language, and tradition is as Lao as it is to its' cousin in Yunnan province in present day China. When I read that Khmer's comments, I was just pissed off. Lao language and Khmer is different as in  night and day, how the hell that person claims that we still its language, the culture, and tradition. One thing that I know for sure is the Royal classical dance with dancers wearing head gears, that is for sure is from the Khmer. It was brought along during the Chao Fa Ngum because his wife is the Khmer princess. And Morlum, shoot,,I'm not gonna go there.

As Muay in Laos, It was alway called Muay Lai, Muay "Seur Lark Haaung" simply means Tiger drag tail. The stance and fighting movements is quite different that Muay Thai outside of the ring.  The name "Seur Lark Haung" speaks for itself, it's movement is like tiger moves while draggingh its tail....

What is Muay Thai you might ask?  To the world’s Martial Arts community it is referred to as the “Art of the 8 limbs,” as the hands, elbows, knees, and feet are all used extensively in this Art.  On the other hand, "What is Muay Lao?  I’ve never heard of it.”  Muay Lao is the Martial Arts of Laos.  It is very similar to Muay Thai, but utilizes more points of contact.  It is less known and unrecognized than Muay Thai, but just as effective.

"Muaythai" is a national sport of thai society. It has held for competition continuously since Sukhothai period, between 1257 - 1377 AD. During the reign of King Pha Chao Sua, he disguised himself to box with ordinary people in 1702."The Tiger King" He loved Muay Thai so much that he often fought incognito in village contests, beating the local champions. During the reign of the Tiger King the nation was at peace. The King to keep the army busy, ordered it to train in Muay Thai. The interest in the sport was already high but now it took off yet again.

In 1774 Nai Khanohm Tom was famous for his battle against a group of Burmese. Nai Khanom Tom was a prisoner of war in Burma. The Burmese had captured him when they sacked and burnt Thailand's ancient capital Ayutthaya. Nai Khanom Tom must have been a great fighter. Without pause, he took them on one by one through a battering and bruising contest. He defeated ten of Burma's best. King Mangra was one of the first to applaud the feat he had witnessed. 'Every part of the Thai is blessed with venom, even with his bare hands he can fell nine or ten opponents.' The King gave Nai Thanom Tom his freedom and he retuned to Ayutthaya. and a heroes welcome. The army fostered Muay Thai. Soldiers have trained and used the techniques for as long as there has been an army in Thailand. For the military it has always been the close combat fighting skill, the martial art of the battlefield. When a Thai soldier fights hand to hand he uses Muay Thai. But then so does every Thai person, male or female. Watching it, learning it, copying it is a part of Thai childhood. It always has been. Muaythai became the favourite sport and pastime of the people, the army and the King. Historical sources show that people from all walks of life flocked to training camps. Rich, poor, young and old all wanted some of the action. Every village staged its prize fights and had its champions. Every bout became a betting contest as well as a contest of local pride. The betting tradition has remained with the sport and today large sums are wagered on the outcome of fights. Muaythai compettition was an activity that earned income for boxers throughout Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin periods.

In 1921 the competition held on the ground floor with the width of 20 m. (spectators sit or stand around the boxers to form boundary) was no longer existed. a 4-foot ringwith two stairs to get on the ring replaced it mostly. The changes that the sport has undergone have been changes to equipment used rather than radical change.

In 1923 it marked the end of the practice of "rope" wrappings around the knuckles entirely. The police by the interior Ministry prescribed the boxers to worn gloves instead and groin guards.. The groin guard later became a triangular shaped pillow, red or blue, tied around the waist with a through strap between the legs. This innovation was also in response to the growing success of Thai Boxers in international boxing. the groin was a perfectly legal move up until the 1930's. In the early days, the protection was made from tree bark or sea shells held in place with a piece of cloth tied between the legs and around the waist.

The establishment of stadiums, instead of makeshift rings and courtyards, began during the reign of Rama VII before the Second World War. During the war, they gradually disappeared but mushroomed again soon afterwards - MuayThai had not lost any of its appeal. The boxers from up-country once againheaded toward fame and fortune in Bangkok. The glory could be found at stadiums like Rajdamnern and Lumpinee. Muaythai live on air from the ring by TV. Ch3, Ch5, Ch7, Ch9, Ch11, ITV and UBC. The television fight broadcasts rate among the Kingdom's most popular programmes. In the provinces, villages cluster around any available TV to watch. In the city, people disappear from the streets while Thailand is watching Muay Thai. Other modern figures become legends because of a particular skill in the Muay Thai art. LikeApidej Sit-Hirun, known as 'The Champion of Seven Titles', the mostfearful kicker that Muay Thai may ever have seen, he once broke his opponent's arm with his kick strike. Thai Boxing is also becoming increasingly popular outside of Thailand. It has its enthusiasts and practitioners in the Americas,Australia, Europe, Holland, finland, Russia, and Japan

as well as in many other countries around the world. Training camps have been set up in many countries, creatina large number of professional and amateur Muay Thai boxers, coached by many Thai as well as non-Thai Instructors. Today for Amatuer Muaythai have two international organization The International Amateur Muaythai Federation (IAMTF) had organized the First world Amateur Muay Thai Championships in 1995, The International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) just manage Program "WORLD CUP 2000" Amateur Muaythai fighters wear protective helmets and padded vests. for internation Professional by World Muaythai Council (WMC), for Thailand Professional Muaythai associate of Thailand. every person about Muaythai (Boxer, Promoter..) protected by The laws of Muaythai, There is always a referee posted on the ring for each fight, There are competitions for Muaythai champional boxing are similar in their appearance to the society and being globalization. The world's communities accept them as sports for professionals.

The origins of Muay Thai is unclear.

1. One theory is that it was with the Tai people before the Tai immigration to Southeast Asia from China.

2. Another is that it was adopted and modified off of Khmer martial arts when  Thai culture was influenced by Khmer culture.

3. A third theory is that a little bit of both the first and second theory occurred. Muay Thai evolved from its ancestor Muay boran ("ancient boxing"), an unarmed combat used by Siamese soldiers in conjunction with Krabi Krabong, the weapon-based style. Eventually Muay Boran was divided to:

Ancient Art of the Laotian people.

--have started an art form of combat.

--"Mouay Lai Lao" a form of very strong boxing style.

--also a form of boxing that shows the boxer's artful body stance.

--"Mouay Lai Lao" started from ancient boxing style "Mouay Tunk" which
is also called "Muay Sieua Lark Hang" Tiger dragging tail and has been
passed down from generation to generation by exhibitions at various
festivals such as Rocket Festival "Boun Bunk Fai".

--The boxer is usually a direct practitioner of the art of "Muay Sieua
Lark Hang" or "Mouay Lai Lao"

--exhibiting this martial arts fluid and graceful movements, but each
movement is performed with strength designed to take down or dispose of
the opponent.

--It has many "death techniques" such as "Harng Sieu Sabat" Tiger's
Death Tail.

--Currently sportsmen and "Muay Lai Lao" instructors have promoted and
improved the style's artfulness and fuidity.

--but for the combatants "Muay Lai Lao" remains a style that's deadly
and should not be taken lightly.

they are both the same. we just didnt promote it because lack of money and sponsorship. thailand has money and promoted it very well to the outside world and said that it was theirs. ****ing **** huh? just like the khaen, kao niew(real thai ppl eat kao jao), tip kao, a lot of things people think its all thai because thailand put the word out there.. and im sick of it. people come over to my house all the time and they look around and point out many things saying its "thai".... well "its lao! bitch!" but back to muay.. it should just be called muay or better yet, lets put our word out there and show them what muay lao is about

when i fight, i already list it as muay lao. everyone asks, "what is muay lao?". and then they fight out the hard way

lets be strong my fellow laotians, together we can do it, alone we fail

As I Laotian person I'm proud to say it's ours, but I agree that it did originated from Khmer. There's nothing wrong with taking this and that and building it into your own, everything or something starts from somewhere. A lot of old muay lao ai jarn gives the khmer credits, but same as I say before we then create our own.

Btw I'm not trying to say Thai 100% aren't as good, but a lot of the Muay Thai champs in Thailand is either Lao-Isarn or Khmer-Isarn. Still they're Thai nationals, so to cut off future racial comments, no they're not Laotian, just their ancestors (roots). Thank You
