I see.  Ofcourse English is a Universal language.  If you know English, You can travel everywhere.  It's easy to get a good job too.  It's easey to learn computer because Windows softwares in every computer is written in English.  That's why Bill Gates is the richest person in the world.  He is the father of all computer software.  Without Windows, computer is just a trash.  So people, learn English.

Come on!!!!!!!! guys,,,

It is not English!!!!!!!!!! It is French officially adopted as second language.
You see,, Laos held the conference so-called "Francophonie" which means that we are the member of French-speaking community.........Besides, if you notice carefully the name of each ministry, it's written in French....smile

Maybe just that fact that we were colonized by the French but that was many years ago. I see it leaning more towards english. A few of my cousins there have become English teachers not French. Its easier to go English in the world than French!

French used to be . Now is the English because  the whole world use English.
For the benefit of the Lao people is the English language to communicate with the world. Even french people still learn English to do business with the world.

Every Lao people should learn English in order to communicate with the world.
Lao and Thai language are very similar and the vocabularies almost the same . we understand each other easily. Well , to me the more languages  you know is the better off you are. knowledge does not hurt any one. I wish that I know all the languages  in the world.

Stop be an ass hole both of you . Laos used to be the French colony that why French also used to be a second language but now Laos is an independent country so the English would be the best benefit for the Lao people to learn and communicate with the world. Even the French people themselve still learn English so they could communicate with the world. It doesn't  matter.
French or English to me the more languages you know the better off you are because knowledge never hurt any one.

English should be the first second language in Laos. next is Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. French should not be on the second language list.

Because the older Lao persons who are in the government do not speak
English because they got their education from France. Also Laos used to be
French colony that is why. Better off to switch to English because almost
every body use English language to communicate every where on earth.

Neither English nor French is the second language in Laos. For Lao people is still a foreign language. For thoese countries, for example, Singapore, the Philippines or India have English as their second language.

Of course Lao should always be the first and make sure we could develop and
improve the written language which must have the meaning of the words and
sentences to understand by the readers. Also English should be the second
language because almost every body in the world use the English language to
communicate and do the business. Well, who ever would like to learn and know
more language is very good . Science ( Technology) and economy ( industries
and marketing) are the subjects that Laos should pay attention to more than
        learning Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese...cte...

1. Lao : Nang seu phan dan
2.french: PASSEPORT
3.english: PASSPORT

French is official foreign language for Lao PDR, But many people in laos, especially young people speak english more than french. there are french class and english class to choose to study when I was in high school, the student had to join the exam for english class and no exam required for french!!! most of people has chosen the English.

If you want in Laos to talk with young people, you'd better speaking english for sure.
But if you want to speak with older "educated" people (50-60 years old), french is certainly more appropriate as many of those people speak french (and better french than english)

I don't know if french remain the "second official language" in Laos, but it's still used a lot for official purpose (names written on official buildings.... name street in Vientiane: all are indicated in both lao and french, and the plates are new.. not old from the colonial years.). English is more used for business.

i've read a few month ago than more and more young people start to learn french again in laos. A few years ago, only very few still learn french, all prefer english. But now, more and more student want to learn english+french... but of course they remain a minority (growing every year).

Moreover, more and more french people live in Laos. i think French are the biggest "western foreigners" community in Laos (more than 1000 people, growing fast) .

anyway, i wish good luck to lao people if they want to learn french.. my language is so difficult and "crazy" (not logical)... English is much much easier. Anyway, i would advice a lao person who want to learn french to learn english before, and then French (the "basis" are the same, if you compare with the very different lao language).

I have to disagree with you on French being difficult to learn than English.  NO WAY!  English is not easy.  I came to America when I was 6 years old and I been living here for over 25 years and I've been to school most of my life.  Sometime I still struggle with it.    I mean if you want to know it all, not just basic speaking and writing we are doing here on Samakomlao.
