WIDETCH MALAYSIA expects income to improve in 2009 when its new 50-room hotel with gaming facilities in Thakek, Laos, begins contributing to Group Revenue.

WIDETECH, which is involved in consumer trading and gaming, took over the Riveria Hotel under a 50-year Concession Agreement with the Laotian Government in 2007. The abandoned project was refurbished forUS$3m and gaming operation is expected to start Apr 2008 - said CEO DANIEL KONG after the company's EGM.

Group profit is not expected to look good in 2008but will pick up in 2009, riding on new gaming andconsumer trading. KONG said the hotel in Laos started operations in Jan 2008 and the gaming unit was expected to contribute positively to Revenue like its gaming business in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, which stoppedoperating in Jun 2007. The gaming business in Ho Chi Minh City had provided 17% of the Revenue for FYE Mar 31, 2007, he said.
Asked whether the Company planned to open more gaming ops, he said nothing concrete is confirmed.

WIDTECH will use internally generated funds for new investments and also to penetrate the northern region of China, he added.

Lao people can't even have money to buy everydays foods, clothes, rice, or send the kids to school.  Who the hell has money to burn in Casino place.  This is just the world of the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer.  "Phu kin kin phoe haak, phu yaak yaak phoe tay"  sorry I can't type Lao language in my computer.

That is not true, Lao people can enter if they have money as far as Dansavanh Casino is concern. Casino is not a way out of poverty for Laos, I don't know what is the government thinking? I just hope that Casino won't make many Lao people homeless, or beggars at least for now. But the impact from gambling may not be so bright 'cause of addictions.

I don't know if Lao government can distinguish bad inverstments from good investments, look like they allow almost any form of projects to proceed in Laos. Dams, Mining sectors, rubber plantations, the impact to the environment is too great from dams, mining, and rubber plantation because of chemical contamination, deforestation. They're echoing about Eco-tourism, when there are not many forest left who would wanna go to Laos for Eco-tourism. I hope the government would think hard about forest and environment if they really wanna to attract Eco-tourists for many years to come as was feature on NBC Today Show with Matt Lauer.

I feel like Lao government is rushing just to catch up with the rest of the world by borrowing, or in turn exchange lands for developement. I would be proud of the developement, or process if it truely from the hard work and the knowledge of Lao people. I believe Laos have to earn it, not giving land away by wanting to have a Mahattan like, or modern city. To me this is the most worry some about the action of Lao government allowing many Chinese to just walk right in your fron yard....

That's a discrimination against its own people.  So Lao people can only stand outside the fence of casino place,  poor guys.  And the 2nd thing, Why Chinese people settlement in Laos is the center of the discussion everywhere?  Besides Viangjan, where else are Chinese?  Are they here yet?  And does Lao Gov. know about this discussion? Do Lao and those chinese people get along?  Are they friendly?  Are they allowed to go everywhere? do everything?  I am just curious!

Besides Viangjan, where else are Chinese?  Are they here yet? Are they friendly?

Met many of them in Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Udomxai, Phongsaly, & Luang Prabang provinces. Some came here a few generations ago & have relatives everywhere, some just recently (first generation). Many hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, KTV places, nightclubs, even bakeries in Muang Xay & Luang Namtha are owned & run by them, many shops & stalls in the market too especially the 'dry goods' section, easy to bargain in Chinese, find Chinese food & watch China Central TV channel everywhere. One guesthouse I stayed in had a large map of China that included northern Laos, helped me to learn the Chinese names of places in northern Laos. Udomxai & Ban Boun Neua (Phongsaly) bus stations also have signboards in Chinese. Have also seen old maps of pre-1949 China that shows northern Laos (parts of Phongsaly, Udomxai, Luang Namtha & Bokeo) drawn as belonging to China. Saw advertisements written in Chinese for Chinese high school & college in Phongsaly province in Udomxai bus station. Rubber plantations, dams, charcoal business, Boten casino, etc under their control.

Unfortunately, not all Chinese are that friendly...When I listened to the recent arrivals talk among themselves in Chinese, some of them didn't speak very nicely of khon Lao. Basically cheap labour & a source of women cos they lack women for brides & also need 'manpower' for brothels both in northern Laos & Yunnan. Plus apparently (needs to be confirmed) taking non-Han ethnic women as your wife means that she can have more than one single kid for you under China law, even if you bring her to live in China.

Chinese will move & shake & spur the economy. But I don't know if it will be khon Lao who will benefit the most or reap the best. Like in Thailand, Thai-Chinese dominate the economy...& Thai in the northeast, south & upper north are still poor...& in Malaysia, Malays are not exactly overjoyed with the success of Malaysian Chinese in business. Lao government can impose quotas on foreign ownership of companies & land & unversity admission...but the Malaysian government has been doing exactly that for decades under their New Economic Policy & there is still so much social tension...look at the recent Malaysian elections.

When Setthathilat Road in Vientiane was being reconstructed last year, & it rained heavily during the rainy season, the workers worked late into the night to minimise delay of the completion of the roadworks. I observed that all the workers were Chinese & their supervisors were Japanese (project was by Japan)...& my friend commented that it's faster to use Chinese (rather than Lao) workers because Chinese are willing to work at maximum efficiency for those long crazy hours around the clock.

My impression is that many Lao believe that everything is up to fate, if you're lucky you're born smart, if you're not then too bad, just het more boun & hope to be born into a better next life...but Chinese mentality is that no matter how dumb you are, you can make up for it by working twice/thrice/100X as hard & still succeed...that's how they get ahead. Think khon Lao might have to do some catching up & be prepared to work their ass off to survive in this changing world.

I can't agree with you more man. I've seen large numbers of Chinese myself eventhough, I didn't go that far north, I went just north to Vang Vieng in February. It all the dumb government 'cause they isolated the country and her people for too long and the worst is that education system is so poor, Lao people are under equip to out perform, think ahead of their counterpart.

It seems ridiculous that someone asked and answered by himself. The funny thing is all are biased.

In fact, looking at this topic that relates to Malaysia, I feel he had put in wrong topic.

"My impression is that many Lao believe that everything is up to fate,"

Who is this person? You are good sir. I second everything you said.

As for the other person who said "all same person talking to himself and it is biased". Well, next time you should leave your marks too as who you are. Instead of  all the "Anonymous" people talking to themselves.

How can one's opinion is not biased to another person???
confused

So? Is this the 4th Casino in Laos? Hhhmm.. let me count..  1st. Dansavanh, 2nd. Laos/Vietnam border(forgot the name), 3rd. Savanhnakhet and 4th will be in Thakek..

I've only been to only one casino in Laos, which is Dansavanh. I was about to enter the cardroom and the casino worker ask for my passport.  She wants to make a copy of my passport for their record.  First of all, it is illegal to make a copy of U.S. passport and talking about privacy information.  I simply told the gal, No Thanks!!!

Thank for investors to turn thakek as Lasvegas even thought it is small casino . the hotel as photo used to be Poudoy group and its construction has delayed and given up in 10 years ago.
it was expected to be at least 3 or 4 stars rated hotel in that time. thanks again for Malaysian investors to get the job done and providing many job opportunities to the local.
are there the massage service there, foot massage, Thai,Lao or Chinese?

Your question is so confusing? You complained that why showing this again and again and again, then you asked do you have something new to post? It should be : Don't you have anything else to post?"

I hope lao people won't be stupid enough to go and loose their money in such plance, but clever enough to encourage tourists to go there and leave their money to pay lao employees :P

But anyway, i would clearly enjoy to see more usefull and productive investments in Laos rather than such dangerous entertainment places!

yes. casino just a death gate, not the gate makes you entry to heaven.

So many people using their money for a moment inside casino place. If guys in Vientiane, can go and " Enjoin" in Dansavanh Casio ( Ban Kan ) or don't want to go far ? go to Lao- Thai Friendship Bridge and use the services of ST Group.

But as I said, you will loose, not for be winner. smile.gif

i heard that there s no any casino in that hotel, because probably people go to savanakhet instead.. the room price is 500 000 kip for the cheapest price. usually the guest from aboard stay... Many thai tourism don't stay over there, because it's still expensive for them. what about Lao guest? I guess  Lao guest stay in Mekong hotel or another hotel instead..
