Laos has detected 970 victims of human trafficking, including 835 aged under 18, since 2001, Lao newspaper Vientiane reported Thursday.
Between May and July alone, 36 Lao women and children were victims of human trafficking, 16 others of domestic violence and four of rape, the paper quoted President of Lao Women's Union Sisay Leudedmounsone as saying.
The union has called for strengthening publicity and education on preventing children and women from being trafficked in the community, intensifying fights against human trafficking, building up legal documents on the issue, and giving stronger support to victims.

I think, our government definitely would not be able to solve this problem, because they don't know the real reason. In my opinion, the easy way to solve with this problem is to increase minimum wage in Laos. As long as they can earn the suitable salaries and sufficient for their life, they would be happy to work in Laos and definitely, no single person can be lured. The fact that they can be lured by traffickers is because they want to get jobs that hopefully would give them to earn money much more than they work in Laos. As we all know that in Laos the saliries paid to workers of even foreign companies are very low compared to Thailand and are not sufficeient for them even for surviving. However, our government always likes to blame their eduction which, I think, is not the main reason. The main reason is they need money to feed their families. It's so sad that our young Lao girls always ended up with prostitution matter in Thailand.
