The Viet-Lao Power Joint Stock Company will start construction of Laos' second biggest hydroelectric plant with investment of 400 million U.S. dollars before the year's end, local newspaper Vietnam Investment Review reported Monday.
The proposed 290-MW plant, Xekaman 1, will annually generate 1. 1 billion kwh of electricity when it is completed by 2012. 90 percent of the plant's electricity output will be exported to Vietnam.
In April 2006, the company started building a 250-MW hydroelectric plant, Xekaman 3. It is scheduled to become operational by 2009.
Besides Xekaman 1 and Xekaman 3, the Vietnamese firm is working on investment opportunities in other eight hydroelectric plants in Laos' southern region with a combined electricity capacity of 2, 000 MW, said the newspaper.
