Cable bridge to be constructed in Laos ! what is cable bridge?

I came across this news from Vientiane time and wonder what is the difference between normal bridge and cable bridge, and what the cable bridge will be looked like.

Will it look like something like this?

Or will it look like this

Are there any cable bridge in your area?
What it is like?

Japan supports cable bridge construction

Residents of Sopsan village in Xiengkhor district, Huaphan province will benefit from a new cable bridge across the Namma River financed by the Japanese government, as was announced yesterday.

The Japanese government will provide grant assistance worth more than 790 million kip (about US$82,536) for the construction of the cable bridge, under the Grant Assistance Scheme for Grassroots Human Security projects.

Residents in the village and the surrounding area have had little access to hospitals and educational institutions due to the lack of a bridge, which has lead to delay in the socio-economic development process of the area, said the Ambassador of Japan to Laos , Mr Makoto Katsura.

Villagers have also had to put up with limited access to the larger markets in the province, as only the smaller boats can be used by villagers to carry limited amounts of crops to sell at the market, such as coconuts, bananas and pumpkins.

He said the new cable bridge will help to improve living conditions of villagers and contribute to reaching the government's aim of alleviating poverty.

The proposed cable bridge will enable villagers to have easier access to educational and health care institutions, as well as major roads, and help to improve livelihoods within the neighbouring areas, said the Xiengkhor District Governor, Mr Phearth Mapanya.

He explained that it is quite difficult for people to go to the hospital when they are sick or injured, especially at night.

He added that this is the biggest project of its kind in the district.

Cambodia to build 2 sky train lines in Phnom Penh

15 August 2007

Xinhua News Agency

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — The Bangkok Mass Transmit System (BTS) will build two electricity sky train lines in Cambodia ’s Phnom Penh city, local media said on Wednesday.

BTS plans to invest 500 million U.S. dollars to this project, May Vuthy, representative of the BTS Company to Cambodia , was quoted by Cambodian-language magazine Star as saying.

One seven-km sky train line is from Japanese-Cambodian Friendship Bridge to Monivong Bridge , May Vuthy said, adding that another eight km line is from the Central Market to Steung Meanchey, the garment industry hub.

The Cambodian government and BTS from Thailand have studied about the project and they will cooperate to build it, the magazine added.

According to the plan, BTS will build the project from 2008 to 2011, May Vuthy said, adding that the two-way sky train lines will run from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with about one dollar for a ticket.

“When we have the electricity sky train lines, it will help to reduce the traffic jam”, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh Chreang Sophan said, adding that it will attract more tourists.

And they will have KFC as well ...

KFC in Phnom Penh, does it stand for Kampuchea Fried Chicken or Kentucky Fried Chicken?

Malaysia's QSR to open KFC outlets in Cambodia

Thursday August 30, 2007
The Star (Malaysia)

KUALA LUMPUR: QSR Brands Bhd is expanding its restaurant business under the KFC brand to Cambodia.

The first outlet is expected to be operational in Phnom Penh by year-end, said chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim during a press conference to announce the new venture Thursday.

The group plans to open four outlets initially in the capital as well as in major towns. This would be followed by two new restaurants every year.

The expansion to Cambodia involves setting up a joint venture company with two local partners, Royal Group of Companies Ltd and Rightlink Corp Ltd. QSR will hold 55% while Royal Group and Rightlink have 35% and 10% respectively.

QSR's initial investment is about US$3mil (RM10.5mil), which will be funded internally.

The group is hopeful that Cambodia would contribute profitably in the first year. "Everyone likes to eat chicken," Muhammad Ali said, adding that the country has a population of more than 14 million.

Presently, overseas operations, namely Singapore and Brunei, contribute about 15% of revenue.

If this latest venture proves to be successful, the group will consider expanding the Pizza Hut and Ayamas brands to Cambodia as well, Muhammad Ali said.

He noted that besides Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos also did not have the KFC presence.

Glitzy modern satellite city to be built near Phnom Penh and its poor slums
The project is a sign of the country’s real estate boom after decades of civil war. Young people lead the residential boom as they buy new houses.

Phnom Penh (AsiaNews/Agencies) – World City, a joint venture between South Korean and Cambodian companies, has begun building a satellite city near Phnom Penh. The US$ 2 billion urban development project will be financed by South Korea's Shinhan Bank.

The South Korean bank will provide US$ 65 million to build Camko City's first thousand residential units, and infrastructure for the development, which is expected to take between 11 and 15 years to complete. The first phase is due for completion in two years and the latter phases will include a university, a hospital and schools

The development is the latest outgrowth of Cambodia's building boom—one of the country's most visible signs of recovery after decades of civil war and destitution.

Bolstered by its newfound political stability and large injections of donor aid, Cambodia achieved GDP growth of 10.5 per cent last year. And new houses are being marketed to the growing numbers of young Cambodians.

“After the Khmer Rouge regime ended [in 1979], there were more children than average. Now they are 25, 26 years old, and they have families who need homes," said Hang Chuon Naron, secretary-general of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Average price tags are US$ 120,000.

Not everyone is enthusiastic about the trend. Some have voiced concern about Cambodia's ability to manage its urban growth, particularly when 35 per cent of the population still lives below the poverty line.

“We should not have huge developments surrounded by slums, with the poorest of the poor looking up at the skyscrapers,” said Mu Sochua, secretary-general of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.

Noting Phnom Penh's “limited and inadequate housing supply,” Robert Taliercio, senior Cambodia economist for the World Bank, cited the capital's need to manage its building boom without losing its character. “[I]t would be a shame if it became just another generic-looking East Asian megalopolis,” he said.

I hope all of Muang Lao and Vientiane will have great modern developments like Cambodia.

Sabaidee all

I am not sure about the case of Cambodia development, because most of the time I see document about Cambodia, and photos from Flick.com in Cambodia rural areas the country is still very poor. For me if you asked what kind of things Lao should have in we are going to build something, I would say Project like 'WATER FUN PARK' is good, because it provides fun and healthy play for the whole family. KFC Fried chicken and chips, I prefer PING KAI and KAW LARM. Ping Kai tests better and less Cholesterol healthier than fried chicken.
Cable Bridge is very popular now around the world, a bridge built this way even looks nice under the sky.

What is ****ed up is that 83k USD can be easily earned from all Lao abroad, only if they all chipped in 1$, which is enough to buy that bridge over nearly 4 times if ALL Lao abroad donated 1$

Pathetic.
