VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnamese team’s unprecedented success at the 48th International Math Olympiad is the result of enhanced training efforts that are producing a brighter generation of students, according to Deputy Education Minister Tran Van Nhung.
“Our philosophy isn’t to train pedigree fighting-****s, so to speak, in short periods of time. But rather, our younger generation of Olympic students is getting better and better.
"They are a whole new, well-rounded generation that has better foreign language and computer skills and health as well as more confidence,” said Mr. Nhung, who headed the 48th IMO Organisation Committee.
He added that the Vietnamese team’s three gold and three silver medals and ranking 3rd among the 95 national teams after Russia and China weren’t due to any special advantage of Vietnam hosting the event either.
“An IMO isn’t a football match. “Thousands of supporters would come to cheer the national team in a match against Thailand for instance, which would be a material advantage. But no one was allowed inside IMO testing rooms,” said he.
The fundamental reason, according to Deputy Minister Nhung, is a decade-long tradition of fostering talented students in all subjects in general and in math in particular that includes annual organisation of national outstanding national competitions to unearth talents and in recent years, constant review of training methods and curricula in the specialised school system.
And the proof of this is that Vietnam has consistently been placing in the top ten in Olympiad contests. But winning prizes at Olympiad contests is just a part of the country’s education plan.
“We appreciate our students’ achievements but these are just the first fruits. Becoming great talents requires a lot of persistence and self-improvement during a life-long marathon. So a good start would be meaningless without future efforts,” said he.
And in order to ensure that talented students will have a good start, the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) will send all of those who have won medals in international contests to study abroad.
Students with exceptional talents, in particular, will have a chance to enroll in the likes of Cambridge University in England, Harvard in the US and Paris Polytechnics University in France. There is also the hope on the part of the state that in the next 20 or 30 years, Vietnamese people will have their share of Nobel prizes.
And not only will MoET provide outstanding students with undergraduate scholarships to study overseas, there will also be graduate and post-graduate ones for them with the aim of having young and talented PhDs.
Mr. Nhung added that these students would have to promise to return home afterwards, but this pledge would just be a procedure. “All depends on their own sense of responsibility and duty towards their homeland’s development,” said he.

To be able to prepare Lao's students for this sort of events, we have to start from very early years, in Primary school until their Tertiary years. Young Lao must devote themselve to the Purpose of STUDY and Achievement, not to Night Clubs drinking beer as we saw in Previous Reports.
Students must know their Roles. I guess not hard to understand but I you did not follow your role, to put lot of Resourses and Energy in study then the Out come looking bleak. Indeed.
Although Laos didn't send students to study in Harvard, Lao government send good students to Australia, Cannada, China, France, Germany, India, Singapore and to say nothing of our neighbours: Vietnam and Thailand. I don't think all our Lao students are not capable. Some of them are also hard working on their studies. Now, they study in oversea pursueing Bsc, Msc or PhD. So, here what I want say is we Lao students are also not so lousy, only because we do not study in Harvard that's why no news about Lao students, or just the webmaster did not posted the article about Lao students going abroad to study.
I personally think that lao people as a group has a mentality that really needs to be fine tuned to gear more towards the future rather than spending the big bulk of their time living in the past. Beside, the current overall political climate is only making things worse by giving preferential treatment to students graduated from socialist countries. Seriously, does anybody in laos care about Harvard or any other prestigious ivy league schools ?
I do not believe when you got to the top rank out of 95 countries in the Competition and be Happy and Pround of what you have achieved is LOUDSY, but the picture I saw in 1 of the topic showing young lao students after school drinking beer and have fun, and in that topic, it comments ' that students who could drink more beer are a sort of number 1.....that a kind of Loudsy, not you work hard and get the good out come is Loudsy, very confusing view.
One surprising thing in this topic the rank 1 to 3 belonged to all Camardes country. Camarade Russia ( it says even now in Russia in offices, people still calls each other Camarade) Camarade China and Vietnam. Socialist or not something we need to think about it.
In Pakse my sister told me that students go to Clubs along the Mekong, and lot of gangsters fighting in those clubs as well. Where are all the polices. Why they allowed young students to go into those premisses.
Good question, I must say there is a mistake in typing the word loudsy, because there is the word loud, loudly...means not quiet, making big noise. But in this case there is no word loudsy but Lousy without a d, and this word using for bad colloq, or when people use this word for describe about a person, they have bad intension, like insult. Lousy mean infested with lice. A lousy dinner (slang) well provided, he is lousy with money. If you did not know how to use the word, it's quite allright but if you did understand then your intention is not good, put it that way. For me I have friend from IRAN, he told me he was disappointed because Iran was not in the top rank, I watched Russian tv on SBS Australia, and saw young russians about 4, boys and girls to receive Gold medals in that competition back home in Russia, all of them are happy and pround, held their Medals high.
Yes, of course I know the meaning of the word "lousy", I am just interested on the previous person claiming. He looked like talking not in the mentioned topics that's why I don't understand what he was talking about. I am also surprising on what he is not realistic, he even cannot accept that the Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese students become the winners. He might expect other nations like French, American or British. The other thing, probably he is not Laos, claming that he heard from his sister that Lao students go to clubs in Pakse. I think everywhere there are good and bad students, and no exception in USA, France, UK. As we all know the event in USA, one student killed about 20 people and killed himself. Also, I heard from BBC, the state home affair minister of British accepted that she ever consumpted the kind of Yaba when she was in University.
To be able to get to the top you must study hard. There is a link there, if you could not see that is your problem. Good and bad students are everywhere but do not think that is not serious problems or and important Issue for authority to look at, not only in Lao, but everywhere, because young students are the future generation of a country. You sit and drink beer in Clubs instead of reading your text books then you have a big problem with your study. Let say we sit here and enjoy the magic of Internet, then you must think how does it work, you must understand about the Protocol of Networking which all countries to use Internet must accept, then you must understand about the 7 Layers OSI Model, Application layer, Presentation layer, Session Layer, Transport layer, Network layer, Data link layer, Physical layer. All of these Network Protocols put the Internet into working as we have seen today. I sit here in Australia and communicate with all people around the world who login this website. In Australia there is an annual event for high school students after the final exam, Queensland is the State which hold the street party for thousand and thousand students from all states. Each year Brisbane Police force has to work hard to stamp out drugs and alcohol in this event, because there are people who wanted to take advantages of students who wanted to try new things ( Drugs and drinks ). So the point here to point out young lao students drink beer and cheer as one of the report picture which I saw here is that we must see the danger side of this issue. There are people in those clubs try to introduce DRUGS to those students, as first they will provide free drug for a try but after you went down that road, then you have to buy it for yourself and that the dangerous road which we must see. All your study will be going down the drains.
