(KPL) The number of Japanese tourists is slightly increased since visa exemption granted to Japanese visitors holding non-diplomatic passports has taken effect last year.
“The increase is not high enough because the advertisement on Lao tourism market is narrow and we don’t have direct flights from Japan to Laos,” said Mr Soun Manyvong, Head of Planning and Cooperation Department, National Tourism Administration.
Japan is the first non-ASEAN country Laos has granted visa exemption to their citizens holding non-diplomatic passports.
In June, representatives of the Lao National Tourism Administration will fly to Tokyo and Nagoya, home to most Japanese tourists to Laos, to promote Lao tourism market.
“Most Japanese people knowing Laos are only diplomatic officials, but normal people rarely do,” said Mr Soun.
Data collection on foreign tourists is being conducted in the most interesting tourist sites and provinces such as Luang Prabang, Vientiane capital, Vangvieng, Savannakhet, Khammouane, Champassak and Xieng Khuang.
The data will show us how many the number of Japanese tourists visiting Laos is increased. Mr Soun was quoted as saying.
The government plans to exempt visas for the visitors of the Republic of Korea.
Any visa exemption for tourists of European countries is possible, Mr Soun added.
